people forget, when you have a 600mm lens, the fences becomes invisible.

They call that “vandalism, ” and “destruction of private property”

Me personally I just stand in the other side of the fence, typically in the middle of the track

Remember folks, every safety standard is there because somebody got seriously hurt or died. Especially in motorsports.

Wtf?! Why would anyone try to cut the catch fence?!

Cutting open a fence that protects you gives the same vibes as “If you take off your eclipse glasses you’ll see a much prettier sight for about 1 seconds!”

I do motorsports photography in the uk. You learn the best spots, you work around fencing. But even those tracks that you cant get away from the fence (looking at you silverstone) you get great shots and never notice the fence. People are looking at the cars in the photos, not a slight grey aparition in the corner.

I can't believe people would even recommend that as advice. The catch fence is chain link, which means you can see through it. I doupt those people know that tho. Even tho you can just rest your camera on/through one of the links

Plus the depth of field caused by the fence entering some of the shots adds so much to the atmosphere of race photos too. It makes you feel right there, face against the fence with the cars flying by you

f1.4 - f2.8 with a high shutter speed. It minimizes it even more if you're panning.

DO WE NEED A LESSON ON WHY THOSE FENCES ARE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE?
MAYBE THE 1955 RUNNING OF LEMANS??

the rapid-fire photos sound so satisfying

Technically speaking cutting the catch fence should make it safer, since it reduces the number of holes in the fence.

Shouldn't need to explain why vandalism/criminal damage is wrong.

honestly think is gives the photo edge too. To see the fore-ground out of focus on the chain link looks cool af

I can’t believe people would actually think this is ok, when I’m at Watkins glen I generally shoot in the boot since there’s no fencing and I just avoid areas with fencing because of my lens

I’m not going to name him but there is a somewhat well known photographer in Indiana that cut two holes in a catch fence for his cams. As mentioned, he was removed, banned for 3 years, and worst of all, was arrested for felony destruction of property after the track claimed a ridiculously high cost of the repair.
Never cut catch fences. Never.
