TOM WELLING Reveal Why Certain Themes Recurred So Often During SMALLVILLE

Clip from the rewatch of Episode 34: Rush
Join us for a cautionary tale against the usage of parasites and Red Kryptonite in Season 2 Episode 14: RUSH! Tried like hell to get Sam Jones on, but we’ll just have to settle with gushing over his performance in this fun episode from afar this week… damn who’s that?! After talking about the Chlanaloe love triangle and days in the cave, Michael questions why everything gets wrapped up so neatly so quickly. Tom remembers scenes Sam hated filming, what the ‘car off the cliff’ stunt was like, and why the recipe of Red-K Clark was recycled so quickly.

You also have to remember that you are watching it quickly instead of slowly.

I love the Talk Ville podcast. It is great and interesting. Smallville is my all-time favorite series. Tom is my favorite actor. Michael is the best Lex Luther ever, since he was able to play the drift from good guy to villain. The reoccurring themes were necessary. I am looking forward to every episode. Thanks for doing the podcast guys!

I think they're variations on the same thread but not the same story. Rush feels more like if everyone is on red k and don't give a shit. It also gives a rare chance for Clark to show off his abilities to his friends without worrying about consequences. And I always loved seeing Tom being given the chance to do a new take on the character, whether Red K Clark, reprogrammed by Jor-El Clark, Bizarro Clark and Evil Clark. I think it really brought out his acting and made me appreciate him so much more.

Michael forgets that the show target audience was teenagers and pre teens. Clark, Pete, Lana and Chloe were all teens, teens do a lot of goofy stuff. These breaking out of characters storylines only happenned couple episodes per seasons. Tom is right these episodes were entertaining and fun to watch. Al Gough even said that this type of episodes were always very successful. I do agree on the cringe part tho of watching characters being assholes hurting others characters that they normally care about. But I'm so glad that Smallville wasn't made today and on a network like HBO max. First because I wouldn't have grew up with the show 😂and the series most likely wouldn't have lasted 10 years. We would have 8 episodes per season so missed out on so much content, storylines and great characters development. Lastly the vibes of the show would've probably been different, Smallville is light hearted, nostalgic, full of heart, goofy, epic, tragic sometimes... a great comfort show!

Michael is on to it with this line of thinking HBO would’ve made this a whole other show.
Granted y’all where a juggernaut of the time and these judgements are made in hindsight good.

I totally agree with Michael, there was things that could have been done better, and someone should had said no to certain Ideas, that would has been beneficial for the for the show. With that said I will always love the show just couple things that I would had love to see.

Let’s be honest, we are also just inherently limited by the character. Clark is the most powerful, nigh on immortal being on the planet. Heavily relying on Kryptonite, mentally focused powers, and switch up personalities is how you write within the Superman mythos. It’s a challenge, but 90% of The time I think Smallville did well

On Red K, those scenes with Tom and Kristin were BADASS, admit it!!!

Tom is right. If something is fun and it works, the audience loves seeing it again. Stop being a buzzkill Michael.

Well, look at Superman and Lois. It is on the CW but because of the shorter seasons and more focused plot it feels like a HBO production. There aren’t any monsters of the week. Not everything is resolved at the end of an episode. There isn’t much room for filler so they don’t do anything too goofy with the characters. I really hope you get some of that cast on soon.
I love Smallville but I think I would’ve loved it a lot more if it was more like S&L. But hey, if it weren’t for Smallville we probably wouldn’t have a show like S&L

i fully under stand both Mr. Rosenbaum's and Mr. Wellings points of view it was almost the same story as Nicodemus just one was a poison flower and another was a mix of alien parasite and red Kryptonite, they should have touched more on the other colors and abilities of Kryptonite like amethyst, and Citrine even quartz, it's effect on Clark and humans as a whole i know later on they have a recurring Red K in lipstick that changes Martha but also the budget's from a better network like say HBO and a bigger funded group would really beef up the writing and effects teams as well, it is fully understandable and also depends on the network and the budget as well and extra writer here n there and directors, very logical point's of view and i agree with them both very much so,

It's funny and sad at the same time. You say we did 22 eps. Early tv most if not all tv shows did 30 to 35 eps a year. And ya'll act like it was "super" hard. I am thankful there was Smallville. It was one of my favorites. but still 22 eps. compared to 32?

I disagree with Michael, those other networks would not have made it family friendly or made it enjoyable for all ages.

In all honesty, "Nicodemus" is one of those episodes I don't care for very much. Pete and Jonathan both go nuts with their anger issues, while Lana is typically turned into a shameless sexpot. They did the same thing over again, to Lois in "Crimson". Call me whatever you want, but I don't watch a show based on Superman for the "sex factor", even if its not explicit.

NGL, I really DON'T miss the 20+ Episode series. So much boring filler/
Much prefer the 8-12 episode trend we're on now.
