Показать описание
"Echoes" is a progressive rock composition by Pink Floyd including lengthy instrumental passages, sound effects, and musical improvisation. Written in 1970 by all four members of the group (credited as Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Nick Mason, David Gilmour on the original release), "Echoes" provides the extended finale to Pink Floyd's album Meddle. The track has a running time of 23:31 and takes up the entire second side of the vinyl recording.

Lyrics:

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
No one speaks
And no one tries
No one flies around the sun

Cloudless every day you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

so my friend dave has a theory that if it were not for the limitations of recording media, this song would still be going.

It's a little known fact that this is actually the radio edit. The original version was fourteen and a half hours long. The "screaming" section of the song is a shortened version of hour six. In live performances Nick Mason would take that opportunity to go get takeout for the rest of the band. There was also an extended organ solo during which Gilmour would restring his guitar, as his strings were completely melted by the end of his twenty-third solo.

When the song was over the band members had to be placed on glucose drips to rehydrate, which prompted Waters to declare that the song "could perhaps be a bit long".

Echoes isn't just a song...it's an experience

This is my favorite pink floyd song. It speaks to me. I can lay in bed sober, blasted, it says the same message to me. Life is beautiful...until it isn't. You're all alone, floating, miserable crying out for help. a sound sent out. It's echoed back to you. You hear it, it fades away, you keep trying and it comes back to you...followed by the most beautiful guitar solo ever, you have found peace. The same peace that you had before, on your own, but you need someone to share it with. This 22 minute song speaks years of wisdom to me. I hope someone hears it too. My favorite, most well thought out song I've known since I was a child. Thank you mom for showing me this band.

I listened Echoes sober, on alcohol, on pot, on acid. Each time it brought different emotions and meanings to me. Such a weirdly beautiful masterpiece.

The “screaming” sounds in the middle spacey section were achieved by plugging into a wahwah pedal backwards, an accidental discovery by David. As always, Pink Floyd capitalized and exploited their “mistakes”. The picked 4 note chord in “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” was David playing an Am on the “wrong fret”. He apologized, but Roger heard the magic. The third and very sensual piano chord in “Us & Them” was Rick playing an F#m but accidentally playing an F natural with his thumb. In all cases, they had the presence of mind and artistic curiosity to say, “wait a minute, it’s better like that” and not hold on to what was “correct”.

YouTube autoplayed this after Shine on you Crazy Diamond. I see it is a platform of culture as well.

I consider 'Echoes' to be one of the greatest song of all time... When I first heard that song in 1971 it just blew my mind right out to the heavens and it still does to theses days !

Imagine listening to this in 1971 and thinking "Man, this band makes good music" and then a couple years later an entire decade of Floyd masterpieces like this one begins and the classics come one after the other. Must've been quite an experience.

Only Pink Floyd could make a 23 minute song and still make me think 'It's over already?'

I don't care what anyone says, this is THE best version of this song. As much as I love Pompeii version, this one is perfect masterpiece.

i had just this evening finished playing Dogs... and somebody on YouTube had made a long-Pink-Floyd-songs joke, about Dogs, and about Echoes.. -and i said to myself "Echoes? What's Echoes?" -and I came here...
That was 30 minutes ago, when, I was a different person.
What a universe.

I’ve listened to this song many times before, however 25 minutes ago i was downstairs and had just finished dinner. I had a rough afternoon at work and the vibe coming from the family wasn’t doing me any favours. So I went up to my room, closed the door, turned on my stereo and streamed the audio from this to it. As the video loaded and the tubes in the amp warmed up, i was feeling stressed, anxious and somewhat depressed. But from that first chime at the start, all my worries and insecurities slowly faded away. It’s nice when a song can do that, just take you away to another world. Even if just for a little while.

So many great moments:
0:00 the mysterious, misty *ping* echo from the depths of the ocean.
1:08 the first dreamy guitar note.
2:57 the heavenly vocal harmony comes in.
3:43 awesome guitar riff.
5:27 one of the most beautiful, dreamy guitar solos in music.
5:53 the beautiful guitar cry.
7:01 awesome funky section comes in, one of the best rythym changes ever.
7:25 second amazing guitar solo begins.
10:38 the funky section fades out in an awesome way.
14:34 most beautiful keyboard sound ever comes in, signalling the end of the threatening screaming section. ( more clearly heard at 14:49).
15:29 the ping returns.
16:10 guitar riff starts, more clearly heard at 16:54. The instruments start returning.
17:46 beautiful organ melody arises from the darkness, heroically leading the charge while the drums keep getting more intense.
18:13 one of the most beautiful guitar patterns comes in. Another guitar, moaning deep underneath the surface, lies under.
18:43 heavy metal riff. awesome cymbal crashing.
19:12 heavenly vocal harmony returns. beautiful melody.
21:18 the music gets softer, fades out into a dreamy beauty. an calming, dim sound from the guitar with the emotional, tear-catching piano solo.
22:33 the ping returns, slowly fading out the song while the music disappears into the wind sounds.
One of my favorite songs of all time.
