Russia is developing a new naval base in the breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia after Ukraine destroyed around a third of its Black Sea fleet. In 2023, Russian-backed Abkhaz authorities announced Moscow’s intentions to transform a port in Ochamchire into a permanent naval base, which could threaten Ukraine and the security of NATO member states like Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria.

WSJ explains what the new base reveals about Moscow’s plans for the region.

Hmm, and since 2022 you've been telling us the Russian fleet was destroyed. And running out of missiles. And fighting with shovels.

So the Naval base of NATO in Romania is not a treat to Russia? Please spare us of this one-sided report.

NATO has hundreds of military bases across the world. “Oh it’s ok, it is for defense”. Russia is building one base. “This is horrible, they will disrupt the trade!” Russia has a right to defend itself.

Not mention the US Naval Base in Ochakiv because of course it is just for humanitarian purpose. Perhaps a quick "rename" of the black sea would satisfy the WSJ.

Since when do Russian naval bases disrupt maritime trade? Is this the level of journalism we deserve?

And what about the almost 800 us bases around the world? Stop provoking Russia and calling Russia aggressive.

That's not a naval base. That's a warehouse for rusty shovels and stolen washing machines.

When will Trump end the war in a day as he indicated?

Russia has other naval ports on the Black Sea already. Its disingenuous to claim that a new one will result in existential risk to ships using the area

Abkhazia not a breakaway region controlled by russia-backed separatist forces, it is part of Georgia occupied by the russians pretending to be separatists.

That "Port" is small asf, out of thr imagery theres enough place for what? 4-5 ships at Maximum. Russia already has way bigger ports in the black sea, this changes nothing

Only NATO is allowed to build military base. Not Russia.

Doesn't the USA occupy Guantanamo and Diego Garcia illegally? Weren't they both used for criminal activity, such as extraordinary rendition?

the real question is how 9oo+ US military bases all around the globe could drag the planet in ww#3

Why does NATO have an interest at Russia's doorstep?

I am Chinese. We are the biggest trading nation when it comes to Asia-Europe trade, so we have the biggest stakes. And we do not have ANY fears of Russia. Why would Russia disrupt Eurasian trade when it makes money from goods transiting its territory? It was Western countries who cut off Russian energy. It was Western countries who were first to deny Russia use of their airspace so Russia replied in kind. Russia was NOT the initiator of any of these actions. Asian airlines (from China, India, West Asian countries) still fly over Russian airspace, and Russia has never tried denying Asian countries overflight rights, because we don't have a problem with Russia and Russia doesn't have a problem with us.

The headline reads like wishful thinking for certain people who would love to use Georgia in a proxy war against Russia.
