What's the difference between Great Britain and United Kingdom?

People often use the terms "Great Britain" and "United Kingdom" to mean the same thing, but there is a difference between the two.

Great Britain is an island off the northwest coast of Europe. It is made up of three countries: England, Scotland, and Wales. Great Britain is the largest of the British Isles, and people often just call it "Britain."

On the other hand, the United Kingdom is a country made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom is a sovereign state that includes Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom is a country and is independent of Europe, while Great Britain is an island.

My apologies!!! The information is partially incorrect. Isle of Man and Channel Islands are crown dependencies and not part of the UK.

If you’re still a bit confused over the differences, here’s a quick summary:

The UK – a sovereign state that includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Great Britain – an island situated off the north west coast of Europe.
British Isles – a collection of over 6, 000 islands, of which Great Britain is the largest.
England – a country within the UK.

I think you'll find Britain is still in Europe, unless there has been a catastrophic movement of the earth's surface causing earthquakes, tsunamis and widespread death and destruction, which I'm not aware about

"Great Britain is an island". Graphic shows several thousand islands covered by the Union Flag, over 150 of them inhabited.

Clever avoidance of giving Northern Ireland a description, it isn’t really _anything_ other than a group of counties excluded from the 1922 Irish Free State. Trying to even exactly define what to call it generates _trouble._

I was just waiting for the "British Isles" part. He was so close to getting it right. So close.

Great Britain is not as stated here “an island” it’s actually a collection of around 6000 islands.

British Isles is no longer a valid term. Hasn't been for over a century since most of the Island of Ireland gained independence and stopped being 'British' in any way, including geographically. You wouldn't still use Prussia as a reference.

Great Britain is often used as a shorthand way of avoiding the full title: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (and it's dependencies). This describes the political entity.
In terms of world geography, meteorology and geology the term British Isles is sometimes used although this may be controversial regarding Ireland.

You got that wrong, Great Britain is made up of three nations not countries .

About 50% correct. Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are not in the UK. Also, Great Britain is purely that one island, so does not include smaller islands like Isle of Wight, Anglesey or the Scottish Isles.

One question. Is London the official capital of the country? Is it in the constitution? Or is it simply said to be the capital because that is where the government is located? Another question: how many English people have read the country's constitution, politicians included? I am Portuguese and many years ago I bought the constitution book but I confess that I never read it. That is boring to read.
