I picked up this little retro relic from a Goodwill thrift shop here in Portland today. I paid a mere $20 for it and was thrilled to find it in perfect condition. In this video I describe it, show what it looks like inside and out and give it a test run. It was manufactured in 1984 so it's 32 years old.

This monitor is an old fly back double chasis. It has the older cheap china voltage regulators which were notorious for catching fire if you turned the contrast and horizontal deflection units up all the way.

I knew a guy who worked for tatung. He said once kristi mockunoi who was in research and development at a christmass party was drinking soke she took the back off the monitor. Which it says there no servicable parts leave to a professionsl

But she was drinking and touched the yoke. She got a big shock went flying 5 feet broke through a glass panel and ended up in my buddies office

Literally her hair was smoking and steam was coming off her head. Supposedly she said i karimba and fell fast asleep in my buddies lap lol

Early composite computer monitors were literally a modified industrial monitor chassis with some extra features (mine has some special support for 40 columns), an RCA vs BNC input, and a CRT with a different phosphor color (usually not P4 which is white). My Zenith has the same crazy specs you would find in a CCTV monitor such as 15 MHz bandwidth (remember NTSC can't have much video information beyond about 3.5 or so due to the chroma signal).

Overall Brightness affected by content was the norm for that era and type of display. Compensation circuits were present in some higher end displays, but I've never seen one of these monitors have one. My own retro screen is an amber one. Good find. :D

Fun fact: The name "Debian" is a portmanteau of creator Ian Murdock's first name, and the first name of his then-girlfriend (later ex-wife) Debra Lynn.

The "commercial use only" is there because it would have been only certified by the FCC for commercial use, as opposed to home use...there are 2 separate FCC designations...Commercial usually gives off more RF interference...

"32 years old, it's amazing how well things were made" ....

What you really wanted to say is that it's amazing how shit things are made today.
