Kulning - viking song of the mountains

A short "kulning" inspired by the northern mountains.

"Kulning is the word for the ancient Swedish herding call, that has its roots in the nordic medieval age. Because of its special high-pitched sound it was used to communicate with animals and creature through very far distances."

Today people laughed at me when I told them one of my dream was to go in any northern countries, go in a forest under the snow, eventualy find a frozen lake and...sit, being alone, relaxing. Maybe while listenning to music a bit.

My grandmother used to ''joddla' from the kitchen porch, so my mother would hear which direction to go home when she was out fetching the white mountain cows in the mountains (fjäll sydvästra Jämtland) in Jämtland, Sweden. The cows could walk for 20, 30 kilometers away in the forest to eat mushrooms and had to be fetched. My mother went out to get them from she was three years old. One time a team of men went out looking for her and her little brother - maybe they were two and five or something - as they did not come home. They had ended up so far away that they stayed in a hut to sleep as it was too late to go home. My mother was totally confident in forests, totally fearless of walking in cemetaries or anywhere in the night. She could sleep in the forest alone in order to watch some animals in the morning. She knew all about mushrooms (she knew hundreds of types) and we picked all our berries for sirup or jam by ourselves. She knew everything about the household and was very capable in the house and was a fantastic person, never in bad mood or angry. She cooked natural foods and was always with her children, never out to party or any such things. I regret I never recorded anything and I don't know so much about their life from that time in 1920's-1950's. She kept her nothern accent all her life until 1976 when she departed, though we lived in south and middle Sweden. My father had the same interest for nature, so we were always out somewhere.

i wish i could describe everything i feel when i hear your kulning. it feels like im learning the mystery and the beauty of our world. its like i hear nature singing. i hear voices of mountains, forests, i hear the voice of the north. and you singing along with those voices and communicating with the earth. also it feels like hearing people that lived many many years ago. ahh i am so grateful to you that you show us the beauty of the world. you are amazing, truly amazing. kulning is like a rain that cleans the earth, like fresh air in the forest, like wind in the forest.
