UNICEF Decries Israel's 'War on Children' as Starvation & Deaths Mount in Gaza

The Israeli military on Sunday announced a daily "tactical pause" in its attacks on Rafah to allow humanitarian relief to enter the Gaza Strip, after systematically blocking aid from reaching Palestinians in Gaza since October 7. While a full ceasefire is still vital, "any pause in the bombing is good news for children," says UNICEF spokesperson James Elder, speaking to Democracy Now! from Rafah. "The physical and psychological exhaustion they face is almost impossible to capture," he says, characterizing Israel's offensive as "a war on children."

Children are smaller and have fewer body-fat stores to draw from. They fail much faster. Within days, faced with nothing to eat, the body begins feeding on itself. The body starts to consume energy stores — carbohydrates, fats and then, scavenging the protein parts of tissue. Kidney function is impaired, and the immune system weakens becoming stalked by infection, inflamed intestines, and diseases such as anemia, pneumonia, cholera, diarrhea, hepatitis, malaria. The heart, lungs, and other organs weaken and shrivel without food, eventually so does the brain. In this process that includes incomprehensible pain, finally, the heart stops.

Save for the little humane aid making it through, when it does, and though the world stands with them, they surely feel abandoned bc their situation has not improved. Holding back the tears so I'm able to see what I'm writing. I don't even know how anyone there is still able to keep going, keep standing, keep looking for food and water, keep moving from one place to another, in hope of finding safety for their children. My love and protectiveness of children, all children, no matter the color of their skin, their religion or place of origin is so strong and so fierce that their are times such as this that I feel as if I'm going to have a heart attack or stroke. And I can get food, I can get water, I can sleep, I am safe, my own are safe and secure.
