Famine by October? Somalia & East Africa Face Humanitarian Crisis Amid Climate Change, Ukraine War

We look at the devastating effects of climate change and global inequity in East Africa, and how many countries face drought and a looming famine, with guests in Mogadishu, Somalia, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. “The current unprecedented drought, that is a result of four consecutive failed rainy seasons, with the fifth and the sixth projected to also be below average, is causing a huge food insecurity,” says Adam Abdelmoula, the U.N.’s humanitarian coordinator for Somalia. “I think the agenda for Africa now is food sovereignty,” adds Million Belay, coordinator at the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa.

When you call famine "food insecurity" you do yourself a grave disservice. It strips it of its urgency and impact.

After the ports are demined and grains shipped out of Ukraine, 2 ships out of 87 went to developing nations, while the EU took the rest 96%.
Absolute disgrace.

Thank you DN for covering this extremely important story and many, many others that the main media ignores constantly.

While I appreciate the insanity of the current situation it's been proven that Ukraine's bellyaching about grain shipments was a false narrative with all but 2 shipments going to Europe. While we're showing the plight of Somalia which is grave Yemen and Palestine are facing the same if not worse and silence.

I was in Somalia three times in the 1990's and I participated in a massive lie while acting as logistics for MSF Spain. Nothing was done to improve the circumstances in Somalia even though the Potential for Agricultural along the Shabelle River is way way better than frozen Canadian gumbo on the farm in Canada. Read Wayne Longs article published in a major US magazine on how western NGO's used aid as a coercion as an example of how to influence policy.

Sadly 90 percent of Americans can’t find Somalia on a map…

The children starve as the adults play war games and only look concerned on TV - what a sad state of humanity.

Thank you Amy for your continued work bringing these global stories to us so we might send aid and petition our government. You are an essential journalist for the truth. Perhaps we could take some of the money we spend on bombing in Somalia or Ukraine to feed these starving people. It sure seems like a better use of funds.

Meanwhile, the grain shipments from Ukraine that the West was waffling on about that would save the African countries from starvation, went to the EU - what a friggin joke!!

I ended up in my helicopter crash in Somalia in 1992 while involved in humanitarian assistance in Somalia -- when it gets bad in Somalia it gets REALLY REALLY BAD. -- I'm sorry to live long enuff to see this for a second time in my life. A million will probably die this time. Nobody cared in 1992 and nobody cares today. Ever.

Corruption is the biggest problem that Somalia has. After that is Tribalism. How can you help people that prey on their own people. NGOs also have an incentive to keep this system intact because it help their corporations and military campaigns.

Why reach Muslim countries not coming to help these poor Muslims?

Dear Democracy Now. Why don't you mention that the food problems in Somalia and Ethiopia are actually caused by over population? The population in these countries doubles every 20 years and the land can never support so many people.

Who wants to bet that any excess food they can be sold for a profit will be going there and increase the likelihood that we will experience something similar because of the outflow of food. Any takers?

When you say fueled by the climate crisis, are you implying co2 caused this? Cause if you are, you'd be wrong.

Blame it on the climate change AND the GREED of those countries funding the war.
