How the Spanish Empire Fell

The establishment of the UN spelled the end of numerous colonial empires, from French to British to Dutch, but Spain had already lost its American colonies a century prior, so what happened there?

There's definitely a lot I skipped over in this video, but if anyone here's curious about how this also happened to Portugal, might I recommend my friend Jack Rackam's video on Pedro I? (This isn't a collab, I just thought his video did a good job explaining what was going on in Brazil)

The Aztec and Inca Empires are off to a great start. I wonder if they know that Europe just discovered their continent?

After the Napoleonic invasion of Spain, many South American countries (including my country, Chile) formed government juntas to rule on King Ferdinand VII's behalf while he was imprisoned, this is considered by many of these countries as their first act of independence.

2:17 as shortlived as the Spanish claims over the territory of Nutca (modern day Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and southern Alaska) it's incredible how in 1790 you could start an enormous trip through the entire American continent starting at the gates of Antarctica in the southernmost tip of Chile all the way to Alaska speaking nothing but Spanish at the European settlements, except on the main territory of Alaska, just until then you would switch to Russian.

Very good! I would just add that separating from Spain is not something most Spanish Americans wanted or would have wanted had it not been for the Napoleonic invasion. Also, many Spanish Americans never were on board with independence, and many more opposed it after it was gained due to the massive amounts of lives lost infighting. Also, important to note that independence came from a particularly more radical segment of the upper class that was acting out of opportunism. It was hard to fight back the small rebellions when troops and money were lacking precisely because of French control.

Spain didnt let themselves be invaded by Napoleon. He asked permission to go across to attack dam Portugal, An UK allied. After going in, he decided to stay and delete the Spanish Monarquist.. The Spanish civilians fought back well for 3 years and that was the beginning of the end of The Great Armee.. They lost over half a million French in "The Napoleon Spanish Ulcer"..

In fact, the Spanish were pioneers in the subject of Human Rights with persons like Fray Bartolomé de las Casas and laws like "Las Leyes de Indias" (The laws of the Indies), respecting the languages and cultures of the native american people they encountered, paying them in exchange of labour, educating them in sciences, opening universities (being the only colonial power that did this in America until the 19th century), and educating and culturing the people they encountered along the way to the Spanish form of life.
The Spanish Empire shouldn't be considered a "colonial" one in the same way that the British is considered one, being that Spain greatly developed the lands it conquered. The definitive proof for this is that in South America the natives still enjoy their original homes and in North America, they live in reservations. It was an Empire in the sense that the Roman was one, a civilizing force that looked forward to mix its culture with the ones it encountered.

The Philippines was also a Spanish colony I think. Much of the language of Tagalog is derived from Spanish
