WHY does Samsung DeX have LIMITS?

The biggest mistake that led to the stagnation of Samsung Dex was the closure of the Linux on Dex project. Support and hardware acceleration of Linux systems would drag out new users who were looking for an alternative to Windows. With today's Qualcomm processors, Samsung could even try its own separate operating system, more interesting than ChromeOS. Unfortunately...

I appreciate how you included all sides of the ecosystem into the argument. I think that Samsung & the App Developers need to work together to make DeX & the apps more user-friendly and feature rich. I pretty much do all of my work in a Chrome browser by having multiple bookmarks/tabs open in Chrome at once. If Samsung and the Chrome devs could come together to give DeX full Chrome desktop functionality, I would be completely sold! Then, I would just grab myself a pair of AR Smart Glasses, and my entire tech setup would be set! I could literally work from anywhere with just my phone, a bluetooth keyboard (w/track pad), and my smart glasses. Super cost effective and mobile...that's the future of tech to me!

Samsung Dex has a huge potential but may be they dont want it to become capable or else it will impact its PC/Laptop's business.

I love Dex and I also hope that with Google Desktop Mode coming, it will only get better from here! We also need an official LapDock from Samsung to go alongo with it.

Samsung is a big manufacturer of parts and peripherals for PCs. So they have a natural interest in not completely disrupting the PC market.

Samsung needs to put more resources towards fleshing out DEX and pay more attention to quality control. With the horror show that Windows has become a system like DEX could make serious progress in the market.

If DEX could run full Office applications it would mean I always have my pc in my pocket. A monitor+keyboard at home and one at work and I’d be set. Maybe with Office switching to ARM and snapdragon this is a real possibility.

You're 100% correct when it comes to video editing. It's frustrating but that's the individual app developer's that need to optimize it for keyboard and mouse when launched into Dex.

One problem is that certain apps are not able to run two instances of themselves at the same time. On a proper computer, you are often using two windows of word processor to move things back and forth. You cannot do that on Android. It is getting better, but it depends on developers, if they want to support this feature.

You also cannot drag and drop or copy-paste between applications, like you are used on a proper computer. I have never realized, how often I was using this feature, until I tried to use Android in desktop mode.

Samsung does a poor job marketing dex.. when I am finding videos only a few months old if people just discovering this feature it just shows how poorly Samsung does telling everybody about it. they need to get their marketing team going. I truly believe with so many people filming YouTube videos on their phone and then wanting to go edit it on a laptop, if they were more aware of this program and the phones ability they may quickly switch when they no longer have to carry so much gear around. thanks for another great video

I 💯 agree with you. I have been using Dex since it came out on Note 8. I love the system, but I feel Samsung has not taken full advantage of the capabilities.

Using DeX daily I can't tell clearly that the biggest limit of DeX is the apps, sadly Android apps don't have enough quality control, even without talking about DeX so many apps don't look or work great just when using a tablet. And that is what makes it feel just okish.

What desktop features were removed on DeX with S9? I thought the S9 series will *NOT* be updated to One UI 7 and therefore all the features are still enabled (multi-monitor support, distinct desktop layout, etc).

I think you pretty much covered it.. Android as an OS is pretty robust. It probably needs a tweaked kernel designed for more optimized multitasking at best, but you can certainly get by with Android as it is today... What Dex really needs are desktop class context aware apps. Android is fully capable of it, it's just that no one wants to properly build them... There are a handful of apps that fall into that category... But it's just a handful and that's the REAL problem. More apps would make it more useful...

In the end, I think Android is Google's best operating system with the most potential, even more so than Chrome... It's up to Google to set the pace with app development (at least with their own apps) and encourage appropriate app development. Context aware apps (apps that are hardware sensitive enabling them to change their UI depending on the hardware context, as in mobile or tablet) are unique to Android... Making them desktop class is the logical next step not just for Dex, but for Android as a whole and could even cause a shift in the way people use computers and the overall expectation of what an OS is capable of... I use Dex and quite frankly I wouldn't buy a smartphone (the personal computer of the modern age) without that kind of functionality. It has amazing potential... The hardware is there (modern devices are more powerful than a PS4 computationally), it just needs creative software...

Thanks for bringing the awareness of DEX. It's an amazing system not many people are aware of! Also, Samsung should offer 4k 60Hz support right out of the box without any app to install.

U could use dex with winlator for emulating Windows programs.. i play gta v on my s24 ultra and my tab s8 ultra
