Solid talking points. If you're in the "creative" industry, these topics definitely need to be discussed.

Great talking points! Glad people in the industry are starting to talk about this!

This is the first time I’ve seen it talked about. Kinda was hoping the effects would happen closer to the 2020 election.

Thank you for making a detailed video on the subject to educate some who may not understand why this is happening. Obviously there is more nuance to it than talked about here but I understand how tricky it is to discuss something like this without getting into political arguments with everyone in the comments. You make great videos, keep up the good work.

I would rather pay more for a product made in the U.S.A. or Japan.

For a long time in America we have complained that we don't manufacture here like we used to. I will be glad to buy a camera designed and built in the US. We have become far too reliant on Chinese manufacturing. It has weakened our infrastructure, hurt the unions, and brought quality of goods way down. They have kept prices artificially low by cheating their workers, and ripped off American companies to do their R and D. Things required a reckoning.

Interesting situation! My accountants economics perspective: Tariffs, value add taxes, and goods and services taxes are borne partly by the end user (consumer). They are borne more by the consumer when choice and alternatives are non-existent or minimal, and more by the supply chain (retail, manufacturing etc.) when untaxed alternatives and substitutes are more available. So, the increase passed on is likely to be an amount lower than 35%. (Though from my retail experience, this may be through discounts from the 35% increased ticket price, because of marketing.)
Short term effects will be low because of the stock already on hand, and long term effects can be mostly mitigated by moving manufacturing elsewhere. So the above mostly describes the intermediate short-medium term. Great vid, still, though!

There's also a larger concept - if you don't make products locally, to export (to trade), your currency loses appeal. If you have nothing to sell, nobody needs your currency. Over time Americans are forced to pay more and more because of the dollar's diminishing value. Europeans even worse: 300% more for energy, more expensive food and clothes. Western economies right now are hugely unbalanced towards services (most of them useless and/or fraudulent in intent). And if one studies industrial history, they will realize that the US became a super-power through protectionism (steel & currency) - a historical match with how the Byzantine empire lost its advantages (when they stopped protecting their professional class). Trump is doing what all previous presidents wanted to do but they couldn't (due to political cost). We needed a non-politician in the white house. The opposing side is just proposing to screw the US energy market and raise prices and taxes on everything.

Do you know that China still enjoys almost zero postal rates internationally, using an old UN regulation intended for third world countries? Hence the "free postal" on many Chinese products - which puts small Western companies at a disadvantage.

I'm just here for all the people who know everything about politics but don't work as a politician....

You‘re over simplifying - most developed countries no longer have the knowledge of manufacturing electronic goods. These skills all went to a few parts of the world, mainly areas like Shenzhen.

Even tho financially with automation it’s not far more expensive to take production back … we simply don’t have skilled people in our rows. It’s a sad situation

over simplification... there are numerous reasons that China has that make it difficult for them to justify passing on the tariffs though price increases... and the Federal Government is passing the tariff revenue to offset cost differences to those effected in many forms and tax incentives etc... Tariffs have been in place for longer than you state.. (far more than a month). and we haven't seen a rise.

not all gear is made in China... MANY MANY companies who WERE making their goods in china are leaving china to avoid the tariffs... Their gear will enter the US WITHOUT TARRIF.

You're a smart guy... but I think you might have missed a TON here., or listen a little much to the LA Loonies. LA is the land of the shrieking spewing Trump Hater... stories and conversations get filtered through that mindset, and all of a sudden, Trump is literally Hitler, and everything he does will bring about Armageddon. The fact is, his trade policies are working fantastically, and China is on their knees... all of the tariff stuff will end when they make a trade deal, which will be quite soon. bank on it. they are suffocating. without the tariffs they were hurting us far worse... destroying millions of jobs, killing off our companies (who pay you for your work... )

There is two sides to this equation. a booming economy brings you more work... companies not loosing their IP brings you products in the US... from companies who keep their money here.

There is just more to it than a direct correlation between tariff and price.

on a different subject, I absolutely LOVE your channel. you use the much same gear as I do (C200, etc), and your comments always give me a ton to think about. so thanks for the excellent content.

Discussing Politics...? Tariffs? Maybe stick to discussing making films.
