I think (although I haven't tried yet)
It would be much easier to get some thin line (kite string etc)
And tie this to the slider head and then use one of those cheap motors with some sort of spool/drum to wind the struggle up. (Attach motor to end of slider)

I would think this will give more solid results and be less fiddly than having to get the motor and wheel to be set up just right for friction of the rubber wheel to be working correctly.
