Game Boy Micro AliExpress Aftermarket Reproduction Shells 2023 (Review/Unboxing)

Do you have a Game Boy Micro that's in need of a shell swap? Game Boy Micro reproduction shells have a bit of a history for not being quite as good as the aftermarket shells available for other Nintendo consoles such as the Game Boy Color and the Nintendo DS.

I decided to take the plunge and see if the faceplates and shells offered on AliExpress are worth the time, effort, and money that goes into a Micro shell replacement. The Final Fantasy IV console variant is gorgeous, but will we be able to recreate it with one of these shells?

This is my first ever Youtube video, it wasn't supposed to be the first, I have a few other projects on the go, this one just ended up being the quickest to produce. I've still got a few things I need to learn/improve on, I'd really appreciate your thoughts and opinions on the Game Boy Micro shell and the video itself!

Also, I made a mistake, it turns out that even the official FFIV Game Boy Micros say "Finest Fantasy For", I had assumed that this was some sort of Engrish to avoid copyright, my bad!

I’m glad these repro shells are being made! Maybe not the best quality.. but it’s better than nothing. Original shells are quite expensive and hard to get your hands on

I got the famicom one, it looks basically identical next to my real famicom faceplate and so I used it to fix up my spare micro that had a cracked faceplate, only real complaint with it is that the faceplate sits a little higher than the original, which makes the buttons sit shallower in the faceplate, but it does still work fine so I'll probably use the spare one so I don't feel bad if it gets scratched. I took the adhesive off the back because it makes it very hard to remove the faceplate and I found it took some of the black "foam" around the screen with it when I first put it in without noticing it had that.

Overall it's way better than the older faceplates that didn't even look glossy but you could see through OK.

I just spent $379.66 total on a new old stock Silver Micro from Japan, along with a chrome gold aftermarket front plate and a set of white buttons. Going for a light vibrant gold, silver and white look. I've modified my GBC and GBA SP in the past, plus had an old Micro years ago I bought from Vietnam. Unfortunately that Micro had a bad screen, and my pink Micro was all scratched up.
