My grandmother taught me to buy the best I can afford and to take care of it. Your tips make so much sense. I think of the hymn, "Count Your Blessings." It's true that when we're grateful for our abundance, it leaves little time to be discontent. Great video! Love to all, Linda 💕

Hi Dawn! This video really hit home for me. I recently bought a new mattress, bedding set and curtains for my bedroom. I was back & forth about whether to spend the money on it, but I needed a new mattress and I was downsizing from a queen to a full to fit the room better. I'm so glad I did because now I can start setting up my bedroom the way I want it. I'm doing it little by little, buying what I like (on sale) & paying cash. I'm halfway there already and hope to have what I bought so far set up in the next week or so. I always found a reason not to get the bedroom stuff thinking other things were more important. I finally decided my quality of sleep was just as important, & these items will last me many years 🙂

I wasn't actively decluttering but yesterday I was looking for something in my closet and found a blouse that had slid off it's hanger and had fallen to the floor. It was a summer blouse that I really liked and could not believe I had honestly forgotten I had! SO, clearly Need to go through my closet to look look for the "hidden" items!. Honestly felt like I got a brand new shirt and will try to get as many wearings out of it as I can before the weather turns too cold.

I agree! Years ago, before the age of cell phones, I was preparing for a trip to the Holy Land. I bought a $35 camera. It wasn't the cheapest but it was definitely on the low end. My brother found out and fussed at me so much that I returned it and bought a highly upgraded camera...for $250! It was $500, but on sale! I couldn't believe I did that...but I did. I took hundreds of photos while there and loved every one of them I still do. They make me feel like I'm on the trip again when I see them. It was the trip of a lifetime! I've used that camera a lot through the years...until cell phones began to have good cameras in them. This is an extreme example of buying better quality. I've done it with sheets for decades because I bought low thread count sheets once that felt like cardboard with little spikes. After trying everything I could think of to soften them, I finally threw them away, and as you mentioned, had to buy more. For years, I've "invested in the best quality shoes I could possibly afford. I've bought VERY few shoes, because well made shoes last and last and last...especially if they're well cared for.
Altogether, I agree with you. However, now that I'm on SSD, I can't afford to do that anymore. The scale has been extremely lowered. Good thing I already have extremely good shoes and a very good camera if I ever need one again!
Love to you and your family! Keep those wonderful videos coming! ❤

I so agree. On your first point, it made me think about buying quality shoes. If you are constantly having to replace your shoes because they are cheap quality, you aren’t saving anything. Not to mention the damage that may be done to your feet. 👍

So agree with acquiring what you really want and not settling for what will just do for now. In the long run it works out the same per use and you also have what you want and feel good about it. Also... after a forced retirement I resumed crafting but it got a bit pricey. So now I do what's called charity crafting. Some of the money I set aside for giving I now use to buy materials to make items for others. I have the fun of crafting without having to figure out what to do with it all. I'm still giving but not tithing in the usual way. I stay busy and according to the staff at our local food pantry other people are blessed by the occasional "bonus" in their share. There are a lot of us around but I haven't seen mention of it here. So it's just a thought.

buying the cheapest is not always the best.

hubby bought cheap dish soap.
it's straight up water.
same with cheap laundry soap.
cheap trash bags are a horrid idea.rip, tear, leak

I buy Very little for myself or my home. When I do buy- I only buy quality items. I just invested in a REAL Crockpot Artisan enameled cast iron Dutch Oven. Omg where has this been all my life lol! I've only ever had the psuedo aluminum dutch oven that comes in pots/pan sets. What a difference!!! It heats and cooks So quickly and evenly! I got it on sale for $55 at Target- plus a 5% debit Redcard discount with free shipping. Did I say how much I Love it? It's my favorite kitchen item now.

I love #1! I can't tell you how much I've wasted over the years buying cheap thinking I was saving money but in reality I was wasting because I didn't end up liking the item or it was just too cheap to get my money's worth

I buy generic foods but if I don't like it I will go back to name brands I bought a different brand of laundry detergent today to test it and saved around six dollars

I mentioned my new cast iron enameled Dutch oven just prior. Now I have a money saving tip for ground beef and ground sausage. I used to purchase the 1lb packages and toss em in the freezer. NOW I buy the 1lb pkgs (only on sale of course) and take a knife and cut them into 3. I put each 1/3 into a sandwich bag and store them in a quart freezer bag for future use. I can pull out what I need from the freezer. I don't usually need a whole pound of something. I am currently making a pot of spaghetti sauce. I used 1/3 lb gr beef and 1/3 lb of ground Italian sausage (so 1/3 lb Less than usual). I added diced onion to the meat, 1 jar of spaghetti sauce, and 1 can of Italian diced tomatoes with seasonings to stretch it further. I crumbled the meat finely with my OXO meat chopper as it cooked. (The meat chopper is another late find Godsend). This has been simmering in the Dutch oven for nearly 2 hrs now melding flavors. I will have dinner tonight, then make a couple spaghetti sauce freezer bags with surplus.

i can really agree with no. 1 i buy only name brand trash bags and dishwashing liquid, it doesn't matter for me with body wash but any time i use any shampoo/conditioner besides treseme it messes up my hair before i even finish the bottle now whether others can tell or it's just how my hair feels to me idk but i don't like my hair feeling gross so i use treseme on my hair it's totally worth it and mom would only eat kraft cheese she just didn't like any other brand so we would buy the limit whenever we found it on sale and we would also mostly save it for her she loved it so much.

Regarding tip #1, I have found that initially trying less expensive substitutes for my habitual purchases has broadened my experience and expectations. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. So, when the less expensive works I celebrate it as a "win", sort of who would have guessed this was good?
It keeps me flexible.

Good morning Dawn. I hope your right about decluttering. I'm selling alot of items that I found from decluttering. They are nice items that I don't want or need anymore. Have a great holiday!
