Story? The sea and ocean songs are often metaphors for the soul or spirit travelling through life and possibly beyond. Their tears were tears of joy!

The sea journey is a symbol for the perilous journey of the soul through life, where "no one leaves alive." But it is also about arriving at heaven at the end of life--"a sea so blue and sands so white, no mortal place at all."

Wow Harri, i am impressed that you found this obscure gem of a song. The lyrics and vocal is amazing. We are reading a pirates note. They appear to have passed into hell ( " no mortal place at all ") after killing everyone aboard a ship they attacked. The song is based on the unusual D5 chord.

I first heard this when I was about 13 years old. A classmate had the album and wanted to play this song for a group of us who had gotten together at her house to listen to records, as we did back then. She turned off the lights and lit a few candles and told us all to just shut our eyes and listen. I loved it. I bought my own copy of the vinyl album as soon as I saved enough from my allowance. I played the whole album over and over again, and I still do (although I've got the CD now).

Yes Harri, Procol Harum did do hard rock songs. Robin Trower was their lead guitarist on their first five albums before going solo. His fiery, Hendrix-inflected solos drive "Simple Sister" and "Whiskey Train" to name just 2 tracks. Try these if you wish, Harri. Robin Trower's solo work also demands some playing time. Peace out.

One of the greatest songs ever written in rock

Excellent choice. This is the type of song that one is not expected to love or understand on first hearing. What it is, is intriguing. It will not leave your mind. At odd times, snatches of it will drift through your mind, and it will pull you back again and again. Don't try to unravel it too quickly, it is a puzzle you will enjoy working on for many years.

Love this track. I don't try to understand it, I just enjoy the nautical vibe, the explosive drum breaks, soaring strings. It expresses something but I'm not sure what.
They had a rockier sounding hit called Conquistador if you want to hear something less ballady. Another hit of theirs is Homburg, but it's another slowish one. Anyway thanks for doing Salty Dog. Always enjoy the chance to listen to it.

Listen to the live version from Denmark in 2006, complete with orchestra.

I grew up on this. The whole album is magical. I think the vibe is Early Seafarer, life aboard in past centuries.

Funny you should mention that the music sounds like a funeral procession. They deliberately included a little Frederic Chopin in this, according to linear notes. I love the song. Reminds me of a journey of life, finally ending, and one arrives at a place of joy. 💙

My interpretation of this song is that it is a journey to the afterlife. "Replace the cook. Let no one leave alive." Put the cook back...he's still alive. Let no one leave WHO IS alive. I could be way off, but it seems to me to fit.

This is an absolutely beautiful, melancholy song. I believe it's about a ship that went down and the crew drowned and as death approached they found their way to paradise. A sand so white, a sea so blue, no mortal place at all.

It's not as much the story, but the performance, Bookers' voice is simply perfect. Passion, pathos, agony...
Perfection. Already miss him.
