Hey Friends! This is part 6 (of 7) of the Google UX Course review. As always, I'm going through the course myself and completing it, so my reviews are based on facts, not quick glances. Should you learn responsive web design in Adobe XD from Google? Can you do RWD designs in Figma as well? How well do they teach all the responsive design breakpoints, designing for phones, tablets and computers? Let's dive in!

These video series are great. I'm at the beginning parts of course 7 of the GOOGLE program and thought the same way about courses 5 & 6. It felt very disorganized. The computer I'm using is too old to get the free Adobe XD, so I was still using Figma to pass my projects in. Thank you for putting into words what I was thinking lol.

Probably the biggest disappointment was the final design peer assignment. I checked 5 different assignments and there was not a single one done well. Some people just copy-pasted the example design from Google and changed pictures. Or it was just wireframes. Or it was just a screen with random text and pictures with the name of the assignment "Please let me pass." I got angry for wasting my time and did not check more assignments. I genuinely wanted to see different designs to get inspiration and see how others tackled the same problems.

As a web designer/dev I want to say this: learn what is possible with front-end technology. I don't mean learn the absolute limits of web browsers, no. I mean learn what is CSS grid and CSS flex-box. If You're feeling brave learn what are rem units. Just a 15 minute tutorial. You don't have to be able to use it, but it'll help You figure out how to space items and what really is possible. That's my take on it, as I've started with designing hard/impossible layouts and also got handed impossible layouts to code. Karma is a... 😁

Wow, I really appreciate the work you put into this series. I am just starting my UX journey and plan to put in the extra work. Thank you!

I noticed that when choosing a design prompt for course 6, they tend to be focused on a particular part of the website, like an account creation flow, or a product ordering flow, or a delivery flow. However, when you go through the course, it's as if you're designing every page of your website not just that particular part. Anyone else notice this too?

Always fun to see your reviews as I am just a bit ahead of you. I feel though, and I mean this nicely, that you are bit too focused on the UI designing piece of this. You said in an earlier video that usually companies are looking for a UX/UI designer. This course is a UX design course. That is what they label it. I think a UI course (and I have learned from this course I have zero UI design skills) wold be the next course for people to take. I will also agree it was a bit tedious to recreate all the personas and stuff, but wait Malewicz, for course 7!!!! All over again.

I just got to share my experience with this part of the course. I never watched nor read any learning materials because all of those are not new to me anymore. I straight out, did all the peer-graded assignment and even took the last quiz without prior info about the questions in the quiz and still aced it (on the first try!). Coursera is so broken LOL.

Your videos and reviews have been a huge help for me. I’m an architect and I’m really thinking about changing my professional path next year, becoming either a ux/ui designer or a front-end developer. I read on a comment you’ve worked on both roles, any advice on how to decide between these 2 careers? I feel that with my current skill set (illustrator, photoshop and a little bit of indesign) it might be an easier to follow the design path rather than the coding path (never wrote a single line of code in my life). But I don’t want to just follow the easier path, I would like to understand better the experiences of each job to choose what feels right for my future. Sorry for any mistakes, English is not my first language. Keep up the great work you are doing, it’s super helpful for enthusiasts/beginners ☺️🙏🏼

I'm almost done with course 2. Have you seen the small amount of submissions there is? Course one were in the 10000's. There must be around 400 people doing the complete course, maybe less.

Just some more font suggestions - Poppins, Inter, Mulish. Hope these are open-source timeless fonts too.

Well I took the course for more hands on experience. I completely agree with you where you said its designed from the perspective of google designers more than like universal designer. They themselves introducing biases in their courses😄. Love your videos and thanks for the clarification.
I have planned to take another course as soon as I am done with this course.

It would be really helpful if you walked us through your process of doing one of the assignments with the random prompt :)

Hi Malewicz. Thanks for the review. I'm currently taking the course part 6 right now. Can I skip the research part, like the interview and so on? Lol

Thats interesting I don't know many designers that even uses columns in the first place. It seems that some people just have an eye for this stuff.

really appreciate you breaking the google UX course down thoroughly! i just want to get your opinion, i am currently a fashion designer studying to become a UX designer, and I am well versed in Illustrator, Photoshop, and very basic InDesign. do you think with these skillsets already, it should be rather easy for me to learn Figma, XD, etc? Also UI as well?
