Water Heater Draining is a personal preference. Manufacturers recommend however unless you are on a well @TappPlumbing has not seen in over 37years experience draining your water heater increase the life span of your heater but that is not to say that it doesn’t either. In case you do decide to drain and sediment has got your water heater drain clogged here is a little trick to help you out!

IT IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE that you have a vacuum breaker so that you will contaminate your entire home’s water system!

Here's the only tip you need. #1 When installing the water heater, replace the small restrictive drain valve with a short galvanized nipple and full port ball valve. You will never again have a problem with sediment clogging the drain.

Since a connected tank will be at the same pressure (or higher) as your domestic supply, This will not work at all unless you 1) close the cold water supply and 2) open some hot water faucets (or disconnect the hot side) you need to get the tank to atmospheric pressure and then have somewhere for the backpressure from your hose set-up to go.

You forgot one important detail, you need to open up the hot side on the bathtub to allow water to move otherwise it’s not gonna push anything out of the way.
