My theory is probably... Somebody or something.. was trying to stop you from seeing the true look of the nether and teleports you into another spot of it. But how could the nether leak?... Of course of the portal, but maybe the villagers made it.. But made it far away so the nether wouldn't leak into their homes! And the good loot might be the villagers loot that he left before he went it.. and maybe the heat burned his skin and that's why there's withered skeletons in the nether and maybe the piglin brutes we're experimented in and turned into human pigs....

The endermans we're probably like "there's too much water here we need to find a place with no water!" They actually explained the ruined portals in legends, they are made by the piglins to invade the overworld until each were broken by the armies of the overworld.

Minecraft legends actually solves this, I used to think ancient builders made those but legends fast approaching release shows that the piglins made those to invade, and the united mobs of the overworked destroyed them

The portals collapse in on itself and starts to break apart I guess whatever energy the portal uses is too strong for the portal itself
Edit: also I think crying obsidian is just what happens when bits of the portal are so strong they slightly fuse with the frame, so it is just a mixture between portal and the frame. Also it can endlessly cry because it is fused with the obsidian so it still gives of a bit of portal energy

Or maybe piglins that goes to overworld???, Because if you open ruined portal chest you'll commonly find gold things, and maybe villagers uses water to stop the portal and the water break the obsidian? So the obsidian turned into crying obsidian

So i think its like that the portal was active for so long that some of obsidian consumed its energy, and because some of it consumed too much of it, it basically couldnt hold that energy and shattered

They wanted to conquer the nether and prepared their armors in the chest but when they enter pigmas piglin everything attacked them preventing them so they canceled the attack and broke the portal also the ones trapped became the soukd in the soul sand and thoose brand new portals are the remaining portals from the war.

I think the ancient builders had gone in, captured ghasts, and used them to destroy the nether portals and broke the obsidian with a diamond pickaxe. That's also why there are the fossils in the overworld

Okay this is my theory ::::One Day An ancient Builder Saw A Portal a Opened Portal the ancient builder was curios and entered it and found piglins nether stuff then he saw Treasure
And took it and the ancient builder Go back to the Overworld
And put his treasure on the chest
And then ran away to tell other ancient builder causing the nether to spread and when the ancient Builders saw it spreading they closed it and closed it and the crying obsidian is the left energy

The stone bricks suggest that it was built by the same builders that built the stronghold. The portal in the nether might have been broken by a wither (the enemy of builders).
The ancient builders were succesful at locking the wither in nether and stopped visiting the nether afterwards which left these ruins and nether leaking into overworld as time went on.

My theory is that the ruined portals blown up by it self taking parts of the nether with it. I don’t know how crying obsidian was made.

My theory: maybe the ancient builders have gone in the nether and gave piglins armor so it will protect itself. But..Maybe it is too dangerous, so they brake that portals to the nether or hell. So the mobs won’t escape..

I noticed all the loot inside the chest is gold. Leading me to believe that either the ancient builders made peace with the piglins. Or the piglins left their loot inside the chest before the portal was destroyed.

My theory is that the ancient builders battled the nether and somebody lured the ancient wither inside just as the person who lured the wither in he realized the portal broke and the wither killed the person
