Great advice. Everyone is different but these basics work, and should pretty much work for everyone. I used to have a hard time keeping a consistent angle, but I kept working at it and didn’t give up. I’ve been sharpening on stones freehand since I got my first Buck 110 in the mid 70s. I was able to get it somewhat sharp but the bevel always seemed to be jacked up, at least to some extent. I improved slightly over the decades but I wasn’t putting in much time or effort. About 3-4 years ago I started watching YouTube videos on knife sharpening. Some didn’t help at all and were pretty much trash, but I did find a few really good people who could get a very good edge and bevel, in addition to being very good at teaching you how to do it in a way that I was able to make work for me. I would watch these videos over and over again, in addition to practicing and applying the different things that they would teach. I found Jerad Neeve to be the best for me by a long-shot. I have gone through the playlist from NeevesKnives and watched many of the sharpening videos multiple times. I don’t even know how many of Jerad’s videos I have watched. Over the last six months or so I have found my edges getting much sharper and the bevels becoming more consistent and much better. I still have room for improvement and expect to get a lot better. Jerad deserves much of the credit for my improvement, along with spending a lot of time on the stones, practice, and applying the things I learned. I would encourage everyone who is having problems to not get discouraged and keep at it. It takes time to master it, which I am still working on, and time to develop the muscle memory required to keep a consistent angle.
Don’t give up!

Long time first time. Wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you unpretentious, sincere, enthusiastic advice and info on your channel. I hosted and producer an interview show for a decade and know well how much labor goes into making content. Keep up the great work!

Excellent tip. I've heard people say to raise the elbow but not what that does for you. Thank you so much. I do well with kitchen knives, thinner with a flatter profile, but have had more difficulty with thicker, deeper-bellied folders and fixed blades. This should help.

One tip to really get your wrist locked in is to grip your knife nice n tight. Works for me. Pretend your hand is a clamp made out of steel lol no pressure needed on the stone just on the knife. Then ur other hand rests on the blade to keep it against the stone. I think a lot of ppl think they are supposed to put pressure on the stone but that’s not the case

Cheers! So much difference between sharp and your vids. My stones are concave because they were my grandfathers. I just ordered my first set of my own.

I was told to only sharpen in the one direction, moving to burr to the front of the blade. Then after that, move to a finer grit or strop the burr off. This short does help with keeping the angle.

I've tried this with shaky hands and it's never worked for me and I don't know if it ever will. I have a Wicked Edge gen 3 pro for sharpening cause I couldn't even get consistent results with a lansky. Wish I could just knock out a sharpening job on a whetstone or diamond stone but I don't think I'll ever be able to

U just put into words what I was only able to ever show, nice:) Wordsmith ye be! People would always look at me crazy when I'd sharpen their spear point microtechs (until I handed em back), bc I'll do the same cocking of the elbow, but w d/e blades I always sharpen from the tip downward, like reversed, bc I find it gives u the most needle-like tip, w minimal rounding. Thoughts?

What I really want to know is how do you sharpen a whole ass sword. More importantly, how did they do it way back when.. You know like back in the 80's

Consistently from one side to the next? Sometimes I have uneven bevels

Free hand takes a lot of time and practice. My issue is getting the exact angle on both sides. Been sharpening with jigs and free hand for years. For me, jigs or sharpening systems are superior unless you’re as good as this dude. My OCD needs to know I have the same exact degrees of the angle on both sides. Noticed the edge holds much longer that way too.

I use a diasharp coarse and i absolutely love it, i was wondering if it's true however that for medium and polishing grits diamond is too hard and rough for japanese knives, carbon steel or high carbide blades. Is it true? Have you noticed differences between a blade sharpened solely on diamond, ceramic or natural stones?

Does this method work for axes and hatchets as well

I just opted to buy an Edge Pro Apex to solve that problem.
