If you're part of an international team, you may often share data and reports with colleagues who speak different languages.

The problem is that translating text in Excel has tended to involve a lot of manual updating and even the creation of multiple workbooks.

Thankfully, two new text translation functions arrived recently, which are guaranteed to make your life easier. These are powered by the Microsoft Translator service, which supports over 100 languages.

=𝚃𝚁𝙰𝙽𝚂𝙻𝙰𝚃𝙴(𝚝𝚎𝚡𝚝,[𝚜𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚌𝚎_𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚞𝚊𝚐𝚎],[𝚝𝚊𝚛𝚐𝚎𝚝_𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚞𝚊𝚐𝚎])

Translate text from one language to another by referencing the cell or range in 𝚝𝚎𝚡𝚝, the current language code in [𝚜𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚌𝚎_𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚞𝚊𝚐𝚎], and what you want to translate it to in [𝚝𝚊𝚛𝚐𝚎𝚝_𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚞𝚊𝚐𝚎].

The following translates the value in A2 from English to Spanish.

=𝚃𝚁𝙰𝙽𝚂𝙻𝙰𝚃𝙴(𝙰𝟸,"𝚎𝚗","𝚎𝚜")

Hello, how are you? → ¿Hola cómo estás?

=𝙳𝙴𝚃𝙴𝙲𝚃𝙻𝙰𝙽𝙶𝚄𝙰𝙶𝙴(𝚝𝚎𝚡𝚝)

Detect the language of a string(s) by referencing the cell or range in 𝚝𝚎𝚡𝚝.

The following detects the language of the text in A2 and returns its code.

=𝙳𝙴𝚃𝙴𝙲𝚃𝙻𝙰𝙽𝙶𝚄𝙰𝙶𝙴(𝙰𝟸)

Excel is the best! → en

The codes can get a little confusing, but by storing them alongside the full language names in a lookup table, XLOOKUP can be used to display them in a more convenient manner.

Will these two new functions come in handy in your line of work?
