I have that kind of tinnitus from working around Jet Engines for years and treble health CBT, with TRT, & sound therapy has helped my tinnitus go from a 10 to a 1 during the day. It’s more manageable now but I can never go back to my job even with double hearing protection. The sound makes it go back to a 10 so I retired from aviation and found a job that’s quiet. It did take months to get better but it definitely does work. Your support groups are amazing because I learn so much and see hope that I wouldn’t have seen by other doctors Thank you dr. Ben for another great video.

Can you provide a link for the video about the gentleman who has reactive tinnitus that you reference in this video? Thank you for all the helpful videos.

Hi DR Ben, Firstly thank you for all the vidoes, you have truly helped me ove the past few years. This is the first informative video I have found on Reactive Tinnitus. I developed this (hyperacusis/Reactive Tinnitus) in Nov 2020. Using CBT, Meditation and most importantly sound therapy via hearing aids. I overcame my hyperacusis after 18 months which had the affect of removing the reactiveness of my tinntus. I have habituated well to my tinnitus and now only hear it if it focus on it. There is hope for anyone struggling. I am from the UK and our NHS health system is shocking for Tinnitus sufferers. I do some charity work for Tinnitus UK, formally BTA and I do pass on your helpful video links to people I speak to. Thank you Dr Ben.

hi Dr Ben - do u have any idea what causes Reactive Tinnitus - I absolutely have this as my T changes in tone and sound and volume esp after artificial noise incidents, and sound therapy is difficult and hearing aids were impossible for me. I am really suffering so much with the T the way it is now -I hve had the T for almost 2 years and has steady got worse. It was buzzing last year and now its more solid intense, more piercing - i dont think i can live with this as i am distressed much more than last year

Fans and white noise take on a high pitched tinge for me, either instantly or in a few minutes. And I find high pitched sounds excurciating. Yes I have hyperacusis but thia means I can't just turn on a fan and have masking. Is this reactive tinnitus and how can I stop it because I can't sleep for shit!! Kaiser doesn't care and doesn't give anything for sleep and claims I have no hearing loss. I believe it, I hear fucking everything and it's a terror. I'm in Sacramento, please take me on as a charity case!

Thank you so much, Dr. Ben, for this video. These videos help many in despair, I hope you know that. I have multi-tone reactive tinnitus, and I have a TRT consult locally on the 25th (Pittsburgh, PA). I was told the specialist here is very good, but I will definitely keep you in mind ! This video gives me a lot of hope as my reactivity is so sensitive to even the rain pattering on my rooftop right now. Sometimes I do wonder if my low dose daily ativan (.25mg) may be inhibiting reactivity from improving. I’ve been taking this for about 4 months, started a month after my onset. Not sure if you’ve seen this with any reactivity patients who take a benzo?

Do you have advice for finding a specialist in the UK? On top of standard tinnitus, I have a lower pitch reactive component that will ALWAYS sit audibly above the exact same frequencies I have to use to mask at night. It's like my brain will "carve out" certain frequencies from sounds and play tinnitus in its place. Only method I've found that works is to instead play lofi chill music to partially mask the static component and not trigger the reactive one.

Hello Dr Thompson, I have tinnitus from driving a truck without hearing protection. I have a question: will noise cancelling headphones protect my ears from the loud truck engine? Thanks

Hi. How can I work out if my reactive style tinnitus is a damaged ear or just a brain thing ? 36 hours after I had the Pfizer vaccine I got screaming hissing tinnitus along with a rumbling hum. The hissing tinnitus goes up and down constantly like a out of tune old style radio pushed right against my left ear, and the hissing gets as loud as any noise I hear, so music is ruined, and because the rumble hum is maskable I try and use a fan for that but then my hissing gets even louder. Cookers, microwaves, cymbals in music, crowd noise, all fans, and loads more will make the tinnitus react. I can't win and I am beyond depressed, this is almost 2 years now. I live in the UK so I don't think anything is here to help.

Everything I used to enjoy I no longer do, I can't enjoy TV, films, talk radio, music, jigsaw puzzles, reading, relaxing in bed, talking on phone, cooking, driving, playing video games, concentrating on computer work, etc, it all constantly sounds like an out of tune radio going up and down in severity 24/7. I pray for being asleep because in my dreams my tinnitus doesn't exist or get included in dreams so I can enjoy the freedom of my dreams as though I am a normal person again, but every day I wake up I am depressed again as I instantly hear it. Your video has given me some hope this might not be forever.

I have reactive tinnitus for 2.5 years now and unfortunately treble health couldn’t help me. I was worsening with TRT and still worsening. So many different causes for this mess

Dr. Thompson, I have not seen any of your videos that talk about getting tinnitus as a result of an ear infection. I have long suspected that was the case with me. I am 64 years old and I had a double ear infection in the mid to late 1980's. Since then I have had ringing in both ears but my left ear is much louder. Was that the likely cause or is it not possible to get tinnitus that way? Thanks!

TY for this video.
One question: in rare cases, can a hearing aid agravate tinnitus, even if the hearing aid is well tuned?
Best regards

Great video
Well presented
However I really agree
Don’t self diagnose
But on that advice from the doctor as well many people self diagnose because of the lack of help most tinnitus suffers see with many doctors / ENT and yes even some audiologists have pretty much closed the door on so many that self diagnosis is the new hope for many
Sad but that’s reality today
