Road Tubeless Repair Fail // Now Back to Using Tubes

Показать описание
After successfully repairing an identical issue a few weeks ago on another set of wheels, I thought this video would be a simple 10 minute task before rolling out for a ride. It turned out anything but! I'd been super lucky with the conversion process of the HUNT wheels to tubeless, and have had no dramas for six months. People had mentioned they've had issues with tubeless....and today it was my turn. I'm uploading this as it's the daily grind. This is what people go though. It's not all healthy smiles and happy days. Sometimes shit just does't work like you expect. Thankfully I had an old tyre and tube to install for the ride.

Aaah, Tubeless <3 Just like an abusive partner, no matter how many times I get abused, I keep going back to her ;-)

Thank you for saving me hours of my life. The more I watch about tubeless, the more I'm sticking with tubes

Amidst all the frustration, you had the presence of mind to record putting back the sealant in the bottle! Sooo BRILLIANT!!!

Really appreciate your posting this. Every tubeless video I have seen show people successfully mounting the tire on the rim. Seeing the actual problems that can occur is more valuable than seeing another successful tubeless mounting job. Lots of good comments on potential solutions as well. Hope you gave it another shot and suceeded.

Moral of the story:
1: Clean the tyre very well, remove all the leftovers from the previous sealant. Esp. the hard bits around the bead
2: Lube the sidewall and the rim with soapy water. You need lubricant not glue to move the bead in place and do the initial seal
3: Stay away from sealant until the tyre is seated. It only makes the situation more sticky
4: Air canisters are total waste of money. Too slow to release air, not enough to seat a stubborn tyre. CO2 canisters jet liquid CO2 inside the tyre where it explosively expands and helps it seal
Been there, done all of the same mistakes...

You've probably absolutely no idea how funny this video is! Everyone that has tubeless tyres, me included, has been that guy at the 13min mark in the video. I'm pretty sure I was close to turning into the Incredible Hulk at one point trying to get them to seat 🤣

Your suffering extinguished any lingering thoughts that I might want to try tubeless. So a heartfelt thanks!

That was GOLD! A wise man once told me we learn so much more through failures than we do through winning. This is such a case and so glad you shared it. Keep up the great work.

Shane, I laughed so hard watching this. I started to actually weep when the tire lever slipped. One man's rapid decent into madness. Masterful content. PS. I've watched this twice and I am going in for thirds.

Great to see another experienced cyclist that doesn't always have success. Here I am watching a couple of days before I pick up a new Giant TCR Advanced Pro 1 Disc, that only runs tubeless tyres. I definitely think I will be carrying a spare tube. Many thanks to see this before any flats happen to me.

I like that you shared this. Reality video. Just started riding a tubleless bike and suffered my first flat. After watching your video, now considering on taking it in to the bike shop for repair.

Easily my fav Lama video to date!! So real. Tubeless is a fairy tale that never ends well. Thanks for keeping it authentic.

Glad you still uploaded this, as a valuable lesson for anyone replacing their gunk for the first time to remember to clean out the tyre and bead.

The true nature of what it sometimes feels like, when your doing work on the bike, was a really nice touch man. You put it out as it can and will happen for most people. Not everything is easy downhill cruising. GREAT video ;)

Thanks for the video. If I ever go tubeless, I will never try to repair a tire! I’ll just put on a new tire. Your 2 hours of utter frustration have saved me mine!

I am back to tubes and regular pumps too! Real life tubeless failure, repairs and maintenance are not like the publicity or instructional videos. They're a messy nightmare 9/10 times. Tubeless has failed me so many times in different ways where a regular tube and patch kit would have got me out of trouble or saved hours on the shed. E.g On the first of a 5 day trip I was carrying plugs, plug tools, tyre boots, sealant, Co2 and a Co2 nozzle but a hairline crack in my rim rendered them all useless. A tube saved the whole trip!

I know that you didnt mean for this video to be funny, but i did laugh. Thanks for the entertainment. Tubeless tires are another example of why change something that we know works. (non tubeless)

Thanks for changing my mind about going tubeless.

Thanks for showing this. When you first went tubeless it was so easy I worried folks would get the wrong impression. Going road tubeless just trades one set of issues for another. By and large it trades hassles out on the road for hassles in the shop. I've have the same issue you just had with a MTB tire. Key is to get that sealant cleaned off the bead of the tire. If you don't have time for that then a new tire would get you back on the road and then later on while watching YouTube videos of other cyclists having issues with tubeless tires you could clean that bead of that sealant ;) Better yet you just justified the N+1 bike theory.
