Sales people push wifi capable items on us. I'm an engineer and I limit wifi in my home just because it's so hackable.
Thanks for keeping us up to date Pam!

You're right when you say, "you think you know people when you don't."

You're absolutely correct, Pam!

My friend has surveillance cameras all over his house and property, inside and out. He was attacked by his neighbor, and it was all caught on surveillance. His neighbor faced charges. So, in retaliation, he purchased a device that hacks into my friend's stuff and scrambled everything for about a minute. And, in that minute, he attacked my friend's dogs, nearly killing them. It was such a mess!

Wish things could go back to the way it were before all this technology 😢

Glad someone said it… People don’t realize they will hack into those items too…

😮 why are every day appliances on wifi in the first place? Stoves, dishwasher and fridge have no reason to be on the internet to invite hackers into the home😮

Analyst for a Gov't agency here and she is 100% correct. The device's connection becomes part fo The Internet of Things and, unlike your router which may have decent (or even weak) encryption, these items have NONE of that safety. It's like locking your door, but leaving the windows open.

I never thought about that. Now I have to learn how to set up a guest network and choose that for the appliances. Oh boy. I wish you could tell me to "come with (you), (you'll) show me how"!!

Word to the wise. In the 21 st century we have to deal with the internet and all its abilities but don’t give up your sense of freedom and peace of mind at home, still do thing by hand. Like check what time, date it is, looking at a clock. Or have a calendar. Cook some things on the stove, read a book or the news paper, use your hands to do things around the house, take a short walk, look at the nature around you. Talk to humans, socialize, with friend, that’s living not depend on a tablet.

Many routers have an option to hide the network name. I recommend doing so when you don’t need it visible to connect new items. It makes it more difficult for people to hack into.

True!! my mother went to jail for letting a family member use her computer and wifi. She had no idea they were using it to commit crimes.

As someone in the cyber security field… YOU ARE SPOT ON!! You should always set up your smart home or IoT devices on a separate network. These networks should have DIFFERENT complex passwords. Never use the factory passwords your ISP provided WiFi router comes with. Change the passwords to something complex.

Also if you know how to do it a firewall is also something good to have

This is actually good advice. I took a hacking class and the professor said on day one just because it can be smart, doesn’t mean it has to be. That cheap smart toaster is a doorway to your secrets haha.
