Good points. There is definitely no substitute for research - I felt so much more confident with a few years under my belt than right at the start. I was also helped hugely by being a vertical collector so could focus on a single model range on a single manufacturer (Heuer Carreras) and become an expert on those; I could also turn my hand to most of the contemporary Heuers and probably other manufacturers too to a lesser extent, just through knowing some of the pitfalls.

I’ve had good results with eBay sellers from Japan. Some of them fail to provide enough info, but those that do provide good pics, plenty of specs.
