You might find the story about the original Apollo moon suits interesting. The lunar soil is made of dust-sized, sharp, jagged shards of glass which degraded seals and abraded everything. It acted sticky because it was so sharp, so it stuck to everything and was hard to clean off. Attachments for gloves, helmets and other seals are the most vulnerable. A "onesie" suit with a single opening seal should be a requirement, with this seal protected by a sacrificial layer that can be easily replaced. If possible, seal protectors and helmet viewing port should have many-layered films that can be peeled to expose a fresh surface, and when all layers have been peeled, it can be replaced with another multi-layer stack easily. I really don't know why the MIT designed suit that applies mechanical pressure on the body instead of being an inflated high pressure balloon with a person inside isn't one of several promising alternatives being supported.

I wonder what excuse NASA will come up with in 2023 when spacex is already ready to go to the moon and their own space suit ready and waay better. I swear they just find reasons for delays.

Excellent breakdown of the suit situation Zack. I am sort of hopeful that NASA will continue to move towards commercial partners using the fixed price contracts for its human spaceflight and its components going forward.

Oh... They can't make suits for the astronauts in 2021?... They could make them in the 60s... It's really odd.

They shouldn’t delay Artemis due to suits. if they have to, they should simply pull the old Apollo suits out of storage and refurbish them a bit and reuse.
