Early Feeding for Overwintered Nucs

It can be difficult to know when to start feeding nucs to overwinter them. In this video I talk you through the steps I follow to ensure success in overwintering nucleus colonies.

I show you colonies that need feeding to boost brood production and colonies that dont need feeding or it will set them back as they will have no room to lay brood.

Did you confuse 1:1 for stores and 2:1 for making bees? We use 1:1 to stimulate growth and 2:1 for them to store (around 05:30)

Iv used apistan to treat for verroa this year. I was wondering if anyone else has found that their bees turn psycho after a week of it being in? If i have to open them up its like something out of a Killer bee movie.

Iam life long used to using solid wood bottom hives.
Introducing polys to my apiary.
Are your mesh bottom open for the winter on your poly Nucs ?
Also quick second question
Are your full size poly hives open mesh and if so are they open for winter ?
Many thanks 😊

You did not talk about hard sugar. I set up my 10 frame hives with a 2 inch high box with a screen base - I divide into 3 areas. On the outside sections I fill them with wood chips for moister and I fill the center with raw sugar, The sugar is a great back up. People here in North Carolina use sugar blocks as well (mix sugar with water and dry overnight) . I add a few blocks into the nucs with some pollen sub. I also I add a 1/2 poly sheet on top under the lid for insulation. We still get a ton of snow that sits on top.
