Overwintered Nucs - Episode 1 - Making Splits

Black Mountain Honey is a No Nonsense Beekeeping Channel.

We are based in North Wales and manage around 150 colonies of bees, plus nucleus colonies.

We produce Great Taste Award winning honey and sell nucleus colonies to members of the public.

Our 6 frame overwintered nucleus colonies sell out very fast every year so early ordering is advisable.

We supply F1 Mated Buckfast Queens throughout the season. These are genetics used by the UK's biggest bee farmer - Murray McGregor - and are not available to general public, except through resellers like us! Check out our queens page on our website.

We are passionate about beekeeping and really enjoy helping beekeepers through our YouTube channel.

On our channel you can find information on making splits with swarm cells, making increase with queen cells, grafting larvae, foulbrood and disease inspection, honey extraction and machinery, top tips for beginners, products reviews, instructions and guidance plus much more.

#NO NONSENSE BEEKEEPING is a UK based beekeeping channel, designed to keep beekeeping as simple and enjoyable as possible. There are no overly complicated techniques or intricate pieces of equipment.

We cover all beekeeping topics ranging from queen rearing, disease recognition/control, honey extraction, swarm management/collection, how to make splits and much more!

My personal favourite aspects of beekeeping are selecting queens for rearing, rearing queens for mating, making up nucs for overwintering and collecting swarms.

We aim to bridge the gap between commercial and hobbyist beekeepers and cater for beekeepers of all experience levels.

You don't talk too much. Great advice.

Another great video Lawrence thanks.
I had a really strong hive that was still making some queen cells, took frame with QC and 1 of capped brood and a few bees, had a hive in another apiary that was honey bound so took 2 frames stores, put 2 new frames foundation in and shook in a few bees from another strong hive, just waiting now to see if we get a mated queen.
Did the split nearly 10 days ago, being unusually patient, so wanted to open it at weekend but didn't

Awesome idea for when you’ve a strong hive but late in the season, I think I’ll give this a go!

Got my order delivered from you during the week excellent honey, thanks

Man... I’ve got many questions.
This is my first season with 3 colonies,
These are by far the most informative videos on YouTube.

When should folks order/have the mated queen ready to go...same day or can it wait a few days? It can take up to five days for an ordered queen to arrive in our area.

Brilliant, thanks. I've just 1 hive but would like to split off a nuc like you are showing us. It's a strong colony. Will it affect surplus honey much as the heather will be out soon round here? Thanks for the vids and any advice. Cheers

In that nuc box what's the empty space on the side for?

Did you make sure the queen remained in the original hive? Will the 2 frame split raise their own queen?

Great video can't wait to get into this series will I be weekly ? I've actually just made 4 splits myself 2 days ago the same 2 frames and was worried they wouldn't be big enough! but I'm using q cells to hatch tomorrow so hopefully shouldn't put me to far behind its my first year, also you always say you only really use 2-1 sugar sryup will you be doing the same here to draw out the foundation really excited for the next episode keep up the great work

Will the work if I was to do it only 100 yards away from the donor hive or will all the bees return to the original hive ? Great vids as always 👍💯

Hi, when you say ‘three shakes of bees’ do you mean 1 shake from 3 frames or 3 shakes of 1 frame? Thx!

hello
would it take the bees long to make their own queen instead of adding a queen to the nuc

Hi Lawrence, great video again thank you.
I made a split last weekend as I had swarm cells on the frames. I moved my queen with the split, they seem to be doing OK, I've fed them syrup and there are plenty of bees in there. Looking through the main hive yesterday the capped queen cell I left hasn't hatched (at least day 8 from capped). I destroyed all the others they'd made this week. Do I need to put a frame of eggs in or re-queen? How long should I wait? Fiesty bees!
thank you

1 frame of stores, 1 frame of brood and then 3 shakes of bees?

So you'll break down Queen cells that they'll try and produce will you? Then hope they accept one of your mated queen's?
