Four years ago, NASA made a long promised return visit to a place so legendary in the history of space exploration that it felt like a reunion with a long lost relative. With the liftoff of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), NASA made a bold statement about its commitment to exploring Earth's closest neighbor, as well as other parts of the solar system. In the years since it rose on its rocket, LRO has amassed a stunning array of data on a wide range of subjects. From vital research about the formation of the early solar system, to fundamental research about the structure and natural history of the Moon itself, LRO continues to deliver state-of-the-art information about a place that almost every human being has pondered as it drifts through our skies and our collective imaginations.

I don't know about a hopper but GLXP will have a rover doing just this within 2 years and broadcasting it on YouTube live and in 1080p HD!

I'd like to see a hopper. It roves an area for awhile and then flies to another location. It could analyze samples for years. And it could make a trip to one of the Apollo sites and video the whole thing. It would be fun to watch the hoax nuts squirm.

A flying orbiter can cover more area than a land-based rover!

We've had orbiters around mars, yet we still send rovers for sampling.
sure we sent astronauts to the moon but that's been 40 years and while there they only explored a fraction of moons surface.rovers of different types could be dropped in several different place from the poles to the dark side and would yield tremendous amounts of data.

Rovers would also be far cheaper than sending manned missions and in this atmosphere of deficits and budget concerns, imho its a far more attractive option.

Why doesn't NASA send a ROVER to the moon?
