Will world take action after a week of major climate disasters?

Today, there was yet another warning on climate change: the International Energy Agency predicting global emissions of greenhouse gases will reach an all-time high in 2023 - as governments all over the world fail to 'build back better' as they recover from the pandemic.

There are, of course, constant reminders of the real impact of the Emergency on Planet Earth.

We have correspondents across the globe in climate crisis hotspots - from a proposed oil field off the coast of Shetland, to monsoon rains in India, wildfires in the United States, and the devastating floods in Germany.

No chance. I remember all this being talked about when I was a teen in the mid 80s thru the early 90s. So our family 'did our bit'. Went veggie, recycled, stopped using car as much as poss blah blah etc etc. It's all for nowt as emissions have gone up, consumerism and baked in overproduction and waste have gone global. The ship sailed years ago. There's no way humans will scale back. Look at the response to reopening in the UK. First thing people want is to get on a plane and go get rat arsed. I'm not blaming individuals by the way, it's us, me included that have been manipulable by governments and the companies that really run the show. We can't imagine another way of living and that will be our downfall

No I just don’t see it. I feel govts neither have the appetite or common sense to do what needs to be done. They largely just try to survive from election to election imo. Private money also will not increase until govts/public money does first and there has to be incentives/rewards/profit for them as well. Lastly and more critically the social media/misinformation age we live in means we are more likely to go round in circles for some time to come.

Nothing will change because no one wants to give up their lifestyle. The media won’t say anything because they don’t want to lose their job. Barb

They cut all the trees and they put 'em in a tree museum.
Then they charged the people a dollar and a half just to see 'em.
Don't it always seem to go,
But you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

Yep. We were saying all this in the 1960's

Go after fossil fuel companies, their profits should be used to pay for climate change programs and infrastructure, their businesses should be state owned.

No, of course they won't. Politicians don't do anything without pressure from the public, and there is little of that happening. So if you want to blame anyone, blame us!

We need to focus our minds and unlock the enormous economic potential of renewable sustainable energy. Let's get on a pseudo-war footing and start cranking out the infrastructure that will make our grandchildren proud, safe and rich.
