Of all the separatist movements I'm skeptical of on an economic basis, this is the one I find the most dubious.

An independent Greenland would have a population density of only 0.14 people/square Km, making it 14X as sparsely populated as the 2nd sparsest country, Mongolia

Greenland independence parties sound smarter than Scottish ones.

These things rarely work out well for small nations. They lack the infrastructure for higher education and medicine so end up expecting bigger nations to help. Independence should mean exactly that.

Hawaii and other (actually independent) Pacific Island nations have to pay a huge amount of money in transport fees just to import all the STUFF they can't manufacture on their own due to their remoteness and lack of raw materials for local industry. Greenland would be similar, but swap the generally livable tropics for vastly-separated Arctic settlements where living without any single thing you need = death.

I can sympathize with Greenlanders (especially the Inuit) feeling marginalized within Denmark, but....are you really gonna try to go back to a pre-globalized economy? Where do you get your electricity? Where do you get most of your food? Are you going to go back to hunter-gathering?

There was a time when subsistence living was plausible, even sustainable. We're long past that. Accept some political marginalization as the price for living in an area where most people couldn't live at all. Demand representation. Demand the vote. But independence? The Earth ain't heating THAT fast. Greenland won't be green in our lifetime.

It could maybe become an associated state with Denmark, similar to Palau, Micronesia and Marshall Islands are in free association with the USA + The Cook Islands and Niue with New Zealand. However complete independence would be implausible in the near future as they would have to spend big on imports

Tiny private sector. Heavily dependent on Denmark’s 100 million dollar subsidy. Doesn’t even have 100 thousand people. Is far off any current relevant trade routes. Yes this one’s going to go real well

Sooo... they'll just take Danish money and then bail? That's hardly fair is it? Danish taxpayers basically subsudizing another country

Technically not European. If they want independence, they should do it now. Basically they want to be paid by Denmark until they have enough money to no longer need it. I think they have a right to an independent country but this approach is just pathetic.

Fact is they are in a region that is waay too important geopolitically, for large state actors to leave 60k pop country in charge of an area that is fast becoming more important stratically and geopolitically. Without the same security guarentees they are granted under danish rule, I fear others with an interest in the area would not respect their sovereignty.

However much, the Greenlandic people deserves an independant state, the whole project seems untenable in the long-term.

Greenland sustains itself of an annual grant from Denmark. If it gained independence, it would *IMMEDIATELY* fall under the influence of either Canada, USA, European Union, or possibly even China.

Interesting, it would probably be a bilingual inuit-danish state

Mentioning tourism as a key source of income for Greenland is a bit overly optimistic... I think most people prefer slightly more comfortable weather than -10 degrees Celsius in the winter and up to 10 in the summer...

That's the way to get independence, step by step with a financial plan, not all at once with no plan on what to do afterwards.

This can never happen, they are both financially and economic dependent on us. (DK) So it's totally unrealistic, but the self governing institution up there is never going to tell the full story to the people of Greenland.

I'm not convinced that independence would be viable, anyway, but at least the political parties that are independence-minded are taking a carefully analysed, fact based approach. I only wish we'd done the same regarding Brexit.
