For those of you confused, "Stradivarius" was a reknowned Italian luthier in the 1600s. His instruments are considered some of the best in the world. There are estimated to be around 650 of his instruments remaining today, and on the rare occasion someone sells one, they go for somewhere around $20 million.

I once had a violin that actually said “Handmade copy of Stradivarius” inside it… well, at least they were honest!

When I was a kid, 50 years ago, na elderly lady donated a little violin to the WYES showboat auction. It was a lost strad, literally priceless.

If a musical instrument is called "Stradivarius", I am 90% sure it is magical.

Even some knock offs are gaining serious popularity due to their quality and age iirc

My grandmother has a Violin that was supposedly a lost Stradivarius, she took it to the antiques road show and they were baffled, they said if it wasn't for the fact that all Stradivarius violins were accounted for, they would have believed it was real, it turned out to be an impressive replica. I picked a heavily used one at good will, a Hungarian replica from 1947.

I knew a kid in HS who, for one of our concerts & some of our contests, was leased a Strad from I think it was China? He was an exchange student and that instrument had its own personal guard that went /everywhere/ with it. Including into the room for his solo contest performance. It was honestly more wild to see the security for the instrument than the instrument itself.

This reminds me of when I was working in a museum, and every now and then people would come in with their art, asking for pricing or of it's made by some famous artist.

This guy came in and said he thought he might have found a Munch painting in his grandma's old house... _And if I lived in any other country than Norway, I would've brushed it off immediately._
I never heard about it again, because it needed to be sent of to specialists, but the fact that our curator even advised him to send it in, means that it wasn't too far off!

So I live in Sweden and in the “nice room” (the room that was used to seat guests back in the day) there is this violin hanging on the wall in a corner. It says Antonius Stradavarius in there, turns out it is not real (surprise). My grandfather even took it to some auction tv show and they said that those were very common so now I have a Strad that is basically worthless.

Public service announcement: Several copies of Strads were made over time by students of Stradivarius, some of them come written as copies, others don't, and others may just come written as "Stradivarius"

Reminds me of when I was working at a hotel and a famous violinist (David Garrett) was staying there. He practiced in the middle of the night which made other guests complain, so they sent me up to make "the noise" stop. He was using a borrowed Stradivarius at the time and my boss had recently given me green light to confiscate anything that made noise, such as speakers etc, if guests didn't cooperate.

However, he was super nice, apologized for disturbing other guests and said he wouldn't practice anymore for the night, but I can't help but imagine how he would react if I tried to confiscate the Stradivarius.

"Sorry for playing in the middle of the night, but you are NOT touching this violin."

Stradivarius is literally a Magical Relic of Musical Instruments.

My mom had a Strad in high school as she had been very focused on the violin from a young age. She loved it so much, but sadly her family was not able to afford to keep it. She still misses it, but has moved on with her career and is now a very successful classical violinist. ❤❤❤
