My M4 mini arrives in the mail today. I opted for the base model since, in many ways, it runs faster than my M3 Pro MBP 14, and I already have all the peripherals (including external storage).

If you buy it educational or military program on Apple site. Its $100 off..I bought mine to replace my M1 mini for $499..I also did a trade in...$270 off..$229 total plus tax for an Apple M4 is crazy

Every Youtuber I have seen reviewing this says: Dont waste money on more storage, get the base model, then proceed to review the 1tb Mac Mini M4 Pro instead of the one most people will buy that is the Base

A couple of points. If you use external storage, you cannot use cloud services on the external drive unless you boot from it. So no OneDrive, Dropbox or iCloud

Also, if you boot from the external drive, you will not get Apple Intelligence, which may not be a bad thing

You have to liquid cool a 9950X to 6.7GHz to get the single core performance of this guy, and that's very unstable. Crazy.

Hi. Good recommendations. As you say, for many households who have a Mac Mini as a family computer, the base M4 is a killer deal, and there is no need to look further. There are some great external drives to boost storage for family members, and each member could plug their own external drive in when they use the Mac Mini for privacy and more space—so 256GB is the optimum choice for base users.

The M4 Pro is now so good that it may even be viable for pro users, while the M3 was more suited to semi-pro workloads. The Mac Mini is undoubtedly the best desktop machine for the majority of non-gamers.
