Do YOU have a 13 mm drill bit?

There's a frustrating drill size gap between 1/2" and 5/8" for typical drill bit sets, and my quest to get in between sized drills to fill this gap.

It's customary for drill indexes to skip 13mm because it's bad luck.
On cheap indexes, check the 12 and 14 mm drills, odds are one those will be 13mm. Sometimes even both!

Have you considered a small inexpensive boring head for the occasional odd size hole?
Even cheap boring heads will cut very precise bores. For a little while anyway. Maybe even forever in wood?
Probably need to grind the bars to a higher rake.

Not to mention, a boring head will fill up a nice big solid block on your graph from 1/2" all they way to ... 3"?

Most metric drill bit sets go from 1 mm to 13 mm in 0.5 mm increments.

EDIT: In the metric land of course.

Yes actually, lots😅, all standard drill bit sets in europe go from 1 to 13mm with 0.5mm increments

I love the visual representation of the drill bit sizes. Really makes the issue clear.

AvE sent me. However, he sent me empty handed.

I first drill a 7mm hole and then a 6mm hole, makes 13.

Strange video title as a European, drill indexes up to 13 with 0.5 mm increments are quite common. Often the drill sizes for tapping metric holes are also included like 3.2 mm. Drill indexes with 0.1 mm increments are also available.

I think for the past 10 year I watched every single one of your videos

Now you have the CNC you can make any size hole you like!

For a couple years I bought boxes of random drills at car boots kept the good brands and dumped the rest, resharpened them and indexed them in metric. I can go from 2 to 27 mm in roughly quarter mm increments. I found that looking for pre reeming bits in imperial really helped fill in the gaps.

2:26 the thread in the back is for depth adjustment. You can adjust the size so you can always seat the drill all the way into the machine and index the exact size in the machine.

here in my town in Europe you can easily buy or order normal drill bits (for metal) 13.0, 13.1, 13.2 .... 14.0 mm. There aren't so many specific sizes for wood bits, but I can always use one for metal.

I guarantee you're the only person that has graphed out their drill bits. love it. :)

Matthias is the only creator who I'm not surprised to see writing a spreadsheet in a video about drill bits.

Thank you for making this - I recall many discussions with our machinists on this issue and not understanding the problem fully. Sometimes as a designer, it's easy to arrogantly assume that what you model is possible simply because has simple geometry.

Jobber size drill bits are available by 1/64” increments up to 3/4”. My local machine tool supply shops (there are at least 4 within 3 miles of me)have most of them in stock. I haven’t checked for metric sizes but they generally stock metric as well. Not to mention that McMaster-Carr also has them. For fastener clearance holes I usually go 1/32” over but in your case the clearance on wooden shafts and gears 1/64” would be better. This is probably the only need for 1/64” increment drill bits I can think of in the home shop DIY world.

A tip for if you want an weird size is to take a larger spade bit and grind it down to the required size. Also works if you want an unusual shaped bore (e.g. with a curved end or conical profile)

3:00 Line up the part in the x-y table / vice with the bit that you used to drill the existing hole. Then it's aligned perfectly with the centre of the drill chuck. Leave everything clamped down and swap the bit out for the 13mm.

You can buy adjustable reamers, which are infinitely adjustable for any increment. I bought a set years ago, from 1/4" up to 1 1/2", and I never looked back. They are great.

First off welcome to the new world of CNC! Secondly I stopped buying drill bits that are these off sizes and now just create these holes with a plunge capable end mill in my CNC mill.
