Head canon: Kimimaro’s illness was the direct result of his kekkei genkai. His bone marrow is basically fucked due to the nature of the ability. He either has very little bone marrow to create white blood cells, or his body has a hard time generating any white blood cells due to him constantly ripping bones out of his body. He’s basically got kekkei genkAIDS.

I'm still on board on the theory that the Kaguya Clan was Hamura's version of of the Senju and Shikotsumyaku is their equivalent of Wood Style considering it was extremely rare with only one person being able to awaken it naturally, Hashirama with Woodstyle and Kimimaro with Shikotsumyaku

Hagoromo: Woodstyle= Body, Sharingan = Eyes

Hamura: Shikotsumyaku = Body, Byakugan= Eyes

It would also be a great reversal to the Senju/Uchiha dynamic where Hamura's version the one who inherited his body eventually made a clan of bloodthirsty berserker barbarians.

Further Headcanon: A Shikotsumyaku body technically counts as an Otsutsuki body and therefore would awaken the tenseigan if the user got a hold of a pure Byakugan.
