Feel free to 03:20 to skip the introduction, and get straight to the how-to part.

There are many ways to teach others how a board game is played. This one is mine.
If you want to give this method a go, I'd love to hear the result.
Also feel free to share your own thoughts on how to explain it. Different people means different ways.

The glass comparison is very good. After you start explaining, their 'glass' is slowly emptying itself as the game becomes part of their system and it doesn't need to be all fictionally in their head anymore. That's when you can explain a bit more on the details like you explained. Basically filling the glass a bit again.

Thanks for the tips on this, one problem I have with explaining is that as I repeat something I explained before I may suddenly remember something I forgot to explain and try to add that part when I'm repeating myself and that can get the players sometimes a bit confused. I think it's because in their view I'm not adding the bit I forgot, but perhaps it sounds like I'm correcting the explanation.

Another problem that may occur is that you try to explain the game but people are too impatient and they quickly react: "Ok let's just play the game", even though your explanation isn't over. Sometimes they might be correct but other times they really can't win/play the game without this crucial information. Perhaps it's my own fault at times since I am 'the all knowing one' and not sharing this piece of crucial information will have a huge disadvantage for them.

Something I sometimes add is a bit of logic or humor to why a game is played like this: why can't you put your character to work in the factory and in the fields? -> Because he's only human. Maybe a little bit of humor can go a long way to make the explanation fun and 'bearable' and not be filled with dry cold hard facts. On the other hand it could make the explanations take longer than necessary.

Sorry for the long post. I really agree on all your points and I found myself in this video to nodd often agreeing with what you said saying: 'exactly!'
