In this episode we are trying to dissect official speculation that has now become a part of Indian diplomacy- on an alleged foreign hand at work to run down India’s development- So while in previous episodes we have spoken about Disaster diplomacy, Diaspora diplomacy, Neighbourhood diplomacy etc, this week we will focus on Defensive diplomacy, which is a big part of what the MEA and Indian diplomats in Embassies worldwide have to do.

1) Let us not pretend that the world in general and the West in particular, are not aware of fading democratic values in India for which the present politicians in power are solely responsible !
2) Having said that I would add that, under the current recessionary economic environment, particularly in the industrial countries of the west, India, due to it's own short sighted economic/industrial/import centric policies, has emerged a major market for the Westen industrial countries !!
3) we, as one of the 3 top importers in the world, are too commercially important for USA, UK, France and Germany, the pillars of democracy in the world, to criticize the change of mode of our governance from the Gandhian/Nehruvian type of democracy to Modi/Amit Shah type, which smells of fascist methodology for the last 9 years !!
I am therefore not surprised to see these industrial countries burdened with, recession generated unemployment, bending over backwards, to keep Indian policy makers and their political parties in good humour because business from India provided employment to their mass of workers who were laid off for the last two years, as well as disruption by the Ukraine war.. Biden could not contain his excitement and talked about the number of extra jobs the Indian order for the aircrafts would generate in the US !!
4) Incidentally what economic progress have we made since after the demonitisation generated economic slump, for deserving the complements we are receiving from the Western participants in the forthcoming G20 meetings or the SCO, event due next ?

Yes indeed Indian diplomacy is on the defensive.Jaishankar has hitherto had a easy run lecturing the rest of the world that India has got things right and the proof is a 3 trillion economy under Modi.For the first time this narrative has been turned on its head and the World is questioning Modi's role in the Gujarat riots, Modi's role in the Adani crisis and India's democracy under Modi.Quite extraordinary that the Indian Government refuted all these allegations through a Minister Smriti Irani and as expected claimed all was well except the the west was jealous of India's success and hence out to damage India's rise! This is truly pathetic.Even under Dr Singh India was zipping along at 8% and none of these threats to democracy were alleged by the west.Frankly, the BJP mantra that BJP alone knows what is good for India and the ends justify means and therefore, by hook or crook, BJP will rule India and the States is in tatters.For the first time, the so called invincible Modi and the bJP is staring at a possible defeat in 2014, if not sooner because the Adani affair will inevitably drag the Modi Govrenment down.Therefore Suhasini, your analysis is bang on!
