Currie's break into the music industry came at the age of 15. In 1975, she auditioned for The Runaways, a band formed by drummer Sandy West and guitarist Joan Jett, and was quickly chosen as the lead singer. The band, managed by Kim Fowley, quickly gained attention for their raw energy and rebellious image, a rarity for all-female bands at the time.
Their debut album, "The Runaways," was released in 1976, featuring the hit song "Cherry Bomb," which became Currie's signature song. Her performance style, marked by her provocative attire and commanding presence, made her a standout member of the band.
Currie left The Runaways in 1977 due to personal and artistic differences, as well as struggles with drug addiction. She pursued a solo career, releasing her debut solo album "Beauty's Only Skin Deep" in 1978. While the album didn't achieve significant commercial success, it showcased her versatility as an artist.
In addition to her music career, Currie ventured into acting. She starred in the 1980 film "Foxes" alongside Jodie Foster, which was well-received and helped establish her as a serious actress. She appeared in several other films and TV shows throughout the 1980s.
Currie has been open about her struggles with addiction and the challenges she faced in the music industry. Her autobiography, "Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway," published in 1989, details her tumultuous journey through fame, addiction, and recovery.
In later years, Currie has continued to perform and record music. She has also found success as a chainsaw artist, creating intricate sculptures from wood. Her influence on rock music, particularly as a pioneering female rocker, remains significant. The story of The Runaways, and Currie's role in the band, was dramatized in the 2010 film "The Runaways," with Dakota Fanning portraying Currie.
