The Truth About Ramadan

Ramadan is typically described as a month-long fast. Yet the entire month is filled with feasting. Indeed, binge eating during Ramadan is causing a health crisis in Muslim countries. So why is gluttony and excess portrayed as strict discipline and self control in Islam? Is there a spiritual component to Ramadan? David Wood explores the issue, and uncovers the disturbing truth about Islam's holiest month.

My family is Muslim and I have to agree my grandmother used to cook foods during Ramadan that she never cooked during the rest of the year and she'd mock me for not fasting because she never accepted that my mom and I had converted to Christianity.

This is spot on. I live in a country that is predominantly Muslim. This is exactly right.

I was in Lebanon in 2000 during Ramadan and can testify that many Muslims do sleep all day and then gorge all night during this month of terrible sacrifice.

I used to run a diabetes care clinic. I used to be puzzled that my muslim patients' blood sugars went nuts during Ramadan until one of them clued me in about the realities of Ramadan fasting.

Now I have the answer as to why my Muslim friends have been gaining weight during Ramadan and not losing weight 😂

I was in Riyadh during Ramadan back in ‘84. Muslims from everywhere came to walk around a circle for their religious reasons. As they were going to their big circle, there were many women dressed in black from head to toe sitting on hot sidewalks with only their hand sticking out begging for change. Most Muslims walking by to their religious circle ignored these women. That was my introduction to the Muslim religion.

When I married into islam and saw how much food was eaten during ramadan- all i could do was laugh 🤣

I couldn't fast due to medications, but still lost weight 😂 i ate very little during the day to respect the fast, ate a normal sized dinner at iftar, and went to bed.

Not what my husbands family did 😂 i got yelled at for eating so little 😂

I am a remote English tutor and I would tutor kids during Ramadan last year and I never understood why so many small children would schedule lessons with me at midnight. They were always super cranky and wouldn’t focus on the lesson. I didn’t realize the poor babies were actually hungry and were waiting to eat their meal.

My father-in-law, a Christian pastor, fasted for five days before he visited me and prayed for me when I had a serious illness. I was healed. I didn't know that he had fasted until my M-I-L told me a couple of years later. That is true fasting.

Everyone fasts every day (when asleep) and breaks the fast every morning (breakfast).

How they managed to call a food festival a fast is beyond me.

As an ex muslim who still lives in a muslim family and a muslim country .. this month for me is painful .. I have to starve my self and pretend to fast .. I have to eat in secret in my room and in the toilet if I was in the office . And it have to be a packet food .. yet Muslims in western countries lie and say that there's no compulsive in Islam

As a fat 28 year old... I just learned that I'm a Muslim. I've been doing Ramadan for the last almost 30 years. I must be very holy.

Very funny. But, having worked in Saudi Arabia for 5 years in the 1970s, you are spot on. Binge all night, sleep all day.

Man should not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceed from the mouth of God. The word of God gives us life🙏🙌🏽

I am a born again Christian, and the church taught me that fasting is essential, by the grace of God I even tried 3- day fasting with water only. It feels great especially my spiritual journey. It's a cleansing.

Praise God ❤
