GoPro Hero 3 Wish List

Update: I just posted a review and first look at the Hero3 Black Edition.

Update: The Hero 3 has been announced and has started shipping.
I have not ordered one yet, I will eventually so stay tuned.

Its been almost a year since the GoPro Hero2 was released.
I shot this video to share my thoughts on the features I would like to see in the next
Hero camera, possibly the Hero3 HD?

Black is essential. Quarter/20 mount would probably take up too much room in the limited space of the camera, but they could easily include a very simple bracket that the Hero could snap in and out of that would include the mount. Last thing I would like to see implemented aside from Manual controls for shutter, exposure, focus and ISO would be an auto exposure algorithm that would keep the shutter from massive deviations during time lapse.

I think it started as "an action camera" and quickly started being used by professionals, me included, I don't ever expect it will have full manual control, just a general exposure lock, iris, color, shutter so that the image does not flicker when light conditions change constantly. We agree more then you know.

Thanks for the comment, I look forward to seeing how all this new competition affects the market for these small cameras. I use GoPros everyday at work and have had very few problems. Yes, I agree. Everything I have mentioned above are improvements that can be made in the same form factor, I would not want them to ruin the simple original concept. And thanks for keeping the conversation civil. About editing, I hear you I have a very good but very old editor and need to upgrade soon. I'm thinking adobe premiere but still chewing on that one.

I know that the new HD Hero3 has a 75% black body, but you can get vinyl covers from a range of companies specifically made for GoPro's. The use them in the army and in incognito situations by painting them or using the vinyl covers.

I don't have one yet. It seems to be a great step forward. Smaller size is great. Better frame rates at 720 and 1080 excellent, I would not have thought it possible. I still wish it was all black. I am still hoping for an exposure lock. and the "frame" looks cool.
I hope I will get one soon but very busy at work, stay tuned.

If your new to GoPro I would get the White edition. The Hero2 is essentially the silver version. No need to get the higher versions unless you need the more advanced features.

Yes, you can plug a mic into the Hero2, it works well but you have to buy the skeleton case to use it.

I don't have either, but by what I have read, the silver has a better processor and a sharper lens. But both only do 1080 30fps. On the stills side there is a bigger difference silver is sharper, 11mp stills. I have noticed this in my Hero2.

To further expand on my previous comment about an exposure control algorithm, I would imagine the algorithm to be something similar to a bulb ramping system for DSLR's, that would allow for a larger overall variation in exposure over time, but I'm not even sure something like this would be possible on something as small as a Hero.

In the Hero 3 I'd like to see:
1) Tripod screw hole - Please please please.
2) Timelapse saved to movie file.
3) Bigger font size on small LED screen.Damn hard to see at times.
In accessories I'd like to see. More mounts that use the quick connects and the ability to swivel the camera without having to add on right angled extensions.

Agreed, there is always Hero 4! I will be interested in seeing the Frame accessory. Exposure lock is big, waiting to see if there is any help with that on Hero3 Black.

Yes there are aftermarket skins, but more then likely you are seeing another brand of camera. For example. Top Gear, British version, those are not GoPros, they use high end POV cameras that are connected to a camera control unit and recording device. With the camera control device, you get control of shutter iris color balance gain ect ect ... of course that package for one camera is several thousand dollars.

So, GoPros are silver to keep them cool? So why are the new ones 3/4 black?
Contours are black, never heard of them having overheating problems.
The new Sony Action Cam is black same difference.
Don't know that I'm buying it.

Its a common problem, the natural human response to surprise is often to turn away or fold up .... ie pull your arms in and pull back .... which always ruins the shot. Its a skill to keep a camera on a subject when something surprising happens.

No, only insiders at this point and I have not ordered one yet. As you can see I have three (old ones) already and I do mainly timelapse, so I don't need one but I do want one. I will check out the first videos coming out this week and see. I was hoping you were going to buy it and review it so I don't have to.

Interesting, but would it be able to keep its depth rating? Maybe a splash case with connector holes with grommets not for scuba, but rain resistant?

True, the exposrue lock can also come in a firmware update but not many people have asked for it. yeah that frame could be cool

on the Hero3 or the Hero2? The mics in the camera are ok but not great, I have tested the mic jack on the Hero2 and it works great.
