I respect Michael Culver for realizing he was in with his head under water literally and was not fit for that service. A prideful person might have forced on and put other's at risk. Hope life found you a better fit.

I feel like I can kind of relate with Culver. It's not easy to admit when you're not mentally built or ready for something you had your heart set on. I deal with a lot of guilt and shame, but I wasn't cut out for the job. In the end it's about the good of the team and the people you're trying to save. If you know you're not cut out for something, you may be saving lives and the team by recognizing your strengths and weaknesses and being strong enough to admit it's not for you.... Culver did good. He tried his best and learned something about himself in the process. It doesn't need to be a mark of shame, instead he can be proud of himself that he had the strength and presence of mind to walk away for the sake of others. Well done.

I was born on Kodiak on the base in 1981, my dad flew helicopters for the coast guard!

Unrelated to the unbelievably courageous and highly skilled job these men and women do for us ... In the intro, the gentleman spoke of the joys of living up there when they’ve got free time . Fishing for “20 pound halibut”, for example . Not 30 years ago it was common to catch 90 pounders .
