We went to our nearest hardware store and looked at all the lighting options to find the best growlight possible for the money that anyone could find. We spent over 2 hours there, and looked at hundreds of possibilities. But what we found at the end shocked us all.

For those curious:
Minimum lumens - 2000 lumens @ 6-8” above the plant. The more lumens the better.
Minimum kelvin - 5000k ideal 6500k

I bought the $100 GE option last year that you showed at the end of the video. I also bought a small timer for it. I started from seed: peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, egg plants, squash, zucchini, wildflowers, and sunflowers and they all did great. Once it warmed up and after last frost, i planted them into my in-ground garden and my raised beds and everything did wonderful. I did harden them off to natural sunlight over about a 2 week period before planting them. I had the best garden around last year! I also had a nice compost pile that i added into gardens that im sure helped as well! I decided on that light after watching your old light videos MIGardener! Thank you for the info and trying to help people out instead of just trying to sell us something!

I've been using Walmart LED 4' shop lights, and they've been doing a great job for seed starting. My units were 5000 lumens at 5000k, and they cost about $20.00.

The current Hyper Tough units are 5500 lumens, cost about $18.00, and up to 4 units can be linked together.

Thank you for the information. Some of us live in apartments without a balcony/patio. I tried growing leafy greens indoors on a table but I didn't like the gnats. I don't know where they come from. Maybe a wire shelf unit with netting around it and grow lights. At least some good ideas/education until a better moving option comes around.

As a professional cannabis grower I think you should of also discussed PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation)

I've started a bunch of cannabis plants under two of the "Beyond Bright Lightwave" lights and so far so good. I'm going to have to come up with something bigger soon, but for starting plants they seem to work great for only rated at 21w each.

This is the most helpful video I've seen in a long time. Thank you. I've spent hours at Walmart not getting this right.

I am getting so much conflicting info. on lights. I just watched a YouTube video where the LED specialist said that only high-end grow lights are worth it. Buying cheap grow lights online and ignoring the colors specifications will only hurt you in the end. Now I’m seeing that shop lights is a great way to save money.

Tremendous video... have always wondered what is so special about grow lights! Thank you.

And all this time I always thought that Grow Lights were different than regular lights, that grow light bulbs were of a special type and spectrum specifically for growing plants. I didn’t think you could use regular florescent bulbs. I have some of those Husky Lights that I bought at Home Depot but it never occurred to me that they could be used as grow lights. I have some 4 ft. long florescent bulbs that say on the packaging that they are grow lights and that they can also be used for Aquariums because they have the right spectrum of light. Won’t your fish die if you use regular lights?

Hey Luke, great video! I wish you would just pin a comment that says the optimal ranges of lumens and kelvins.

Does this information also apply to house plants?

You can get LED garage panel lights in 5000 kelvin that take 120 watts and put out 12, 000 lumens, which is a better value than anything you reviewed. My peppers and tomatoes love them. And they're $11.99 before taxes.

I would skip the big box stores and invest in a real, full spectrum light that can be fully controlled from seed to finish.

AC Infinity is a great example. For about 300 bucks, you'll have a great light that will last 20 years

All the stores are selling grow lights. You just have to check what you want as far as what you talked about.

What about red lights? My lettuce is a really pretty brown right now in the greenhouse with regular grow lights... Red will help, right?
