correction: your working out method is correct but the answer is wrong
the answer should be : a=5, f(x) is continuous.

this is because when you say a=1 as the answer, that means the value of (1)1-1 which is 0, is the same as
3(1)^2+1 which is 4 which is incorrect

the rule is L.H.L=R.H.L
