I recently replaced the transmission fluid filter on my wife’s ‘18 Mazda cx9. There was no factory gasket they used some form of red/pink silicone. The new filter came with a rubber gasket.. it leaked almost immediately. I then found a cork gasket and switched it out and that one began to leak shortly thereafter. I then bought Permatex ultra red and followed the instructions precisely. Solid seal absolutely no sign of a leak 👌🏻👍🏻

I use ultra black RTV and usually never have any issues.. Unfortunately when I was putting a new intake on my BBF 460 I did not follow to directions at all and torqued it down right away and fired it up about an hour or so later and sure enough it blew out the front valley seal.. now I get to redo it and follow the instructions this time 😂

I did many gaskets but it was to hurry up and get the family vehicle running again. Now I'm getting into rtv because of craft and hobby. Interesting!

Kids, ALWAYS use a crisscross tightening pattern. Somebody never taught this boy. Also, tightening to spec is great but so is doing so using multiple passes, for instance, if 45ft-lbs is spec, tighten all fasteners to 20lbs, then to 30lbs, then to 45lbs. An eccentric mechanic taught me this years ago. It works.

Great video. I just did my oil pan in my chevy somic 1.8l using permatex grey rtv silicone. I Will wait about 14 hours and not the 24 hours curing time before starting engine just because the oil pump suction tube is integrated in the pan and block and used the rtv between the matching holes oil suction passageway. We will see if the pump cavitates 😊.

Awesome! I have a tube of each! I am going to rip off my wife's oil and transmission pans tomorrow! No, not really I bought it to replace small gaskets in an old WWII compass.

Great video. I've got to reinstall oilpan. Really glad this video popped up. I had planned to only use rtv. Gives me confidence it will work.

I’ve used both and just double the cue time, if cold then I wait several days before starting it
Cold weather does effect it and a clean surface

Thank you So much! This is what I was looking for, exactly!!
I decided to drop the transmission pan & change the filter on my vehicle, I had bought all the supplies in preparation but when I had the pan off I found out that Autozone sold me the wrong gasket 🤦‍♂️ I already had that pan off & the vehicle on my friends lift. He was getting ready to wrap up so In a pitch I used some grey RTV, slapped the pan on, Filled her up & I got her on the road. (I had to get back home)
That whole night, I was stressing because I thought I'd messed up the seal due to filling it & driving it before it Cured. Thanks to you & Your video Im way more hopeful & assured now!!😄👍

Dome trucks like the f350 dont make gaskets for the oil pan. Think they strted making one tho u can only buy online

The oil and transmission pans will also see minimum pressure (although they both should see heat and fluid flung around) they may be less risk for this type of expedited install - other engine components that see pressure may be much higher risk - I prefer to follow instructions (and still have concern LOL) - Great video though. I was glued to the screen to see what happened.

Bad shit happens working outside especially in miserable weather

All I use for air cooled engines is right stuff or gray ultra
At least double the cue time works best for me
No hurry because there’s so many other jobs to work on

Would you recommend using this stuff to replace a Valve Cover gasket?

As a general rule I NEVER use silicone. I much prefer gaskets. The part you claim gaskets are harder to get off, Well' I say the complete opposite. Silicone can take hours to get off however with a new blade I will have an old gasket off in minutes 'UNLESS' someone used something else with the gasket like copper spray or silicone to help the gasket stick then it will take longer. Anyway against my better judgment I am working on a 40y van and I can't find anyone who sells a Sump gasket so I got some RTV Ultra Black which is why I am here watching your clip. Before using it I wanted to see someone else using it and find out any cons I should know. Obviously there will be some that goes in the sump as you tighten it, Willl Ultra Back break down to mix with the oil or is it likely to block up the oil pump or filter?

metal in the oil pan. i would pull apart the engine ASAP and go through it today that quick maybe have the engine out in 4 hours of 6 and tear it down before it blows apart, problem is very small now. wait and then you will say i wish i pulled it apart sooner... Haha...
