That's a good way of doing it. I prefer the heat gun method becouse it doesn't remove any metal it softens the gasket material and it comes right off. Unless its a 2004 3.8 liter Mitsubishi valve cover you need so e C4 for that rock hard stuff but really the heat gun will prevail. 🙂👍

You should try the roloc bristle green disk. They don’t remove any metal off the component but takes off gasket material and rtv really good.

What would you recommend for removing very stubborn paper gasket from a magnesium chainsaw crankcase?

I will have to look into getting that attachment for my drill or impact driver. I have only scraped of gaskets! Thanks for the tip!

I've done a thousand gasket jobs over 25yrs... It IS easier but it's not always "fast" except compared to picking and pealing by hand. Most convenient, most effective, sure. *Warning!* He doesn't mention that you can get carried away quite easily and take off material on aluminum heads and parts, ruining your mating surface, be careful!! :)

Use rubbing alcohol 90% or higher remover silicone. Also use it to clean surfaces before applying silicone. We use it in automotive repair. Makes the silicone bond to surface wear as brake/carb cleaner leaves a film.

Bristle disc is the way to go on aluminum.

I'm nerdy, so I looked up the Blue Scotch-Brite abrasive you used and it's called very fine, surface conditioning. So, I agree with this choice.

I know that some Scotch-Brite pads would eat through that thin material in seconds, if left in the same place too long or if you go over it too many times.

Great choice, thank's for sharing!

I purchased that die grinder when I saw your original video, demonstrating it. Awesome tool with those Roloc attachments. Thanks to you, Don. It really helped me, often!!!!

Enjoy your videos Don 👍. Quick and easy but removes the zinc coating too. Rather take a little more time using a scraper and solvent. 🇦🇺

My goodness that was superfast. Lots of caffeine goes a long way. It even speeds up time. Lol

yup..have them in my toolbox from back in the day that I worked on heavy equipment...they are a dandy way to clean upp mating parts. Care should be taken when cleaning up aluminum though because they can score the surface. (ah yes the days in aprenticeship...just sayin' 😉)

Could I attach this to my oscillating tool?

I've found that wd40 breaks down silicone it makes it almost a gummy liquid that you can just wipe and scrub off. I'm not sure if it'll work for rtv silicone but I've used it in my bathtub

The cheaper tool is a set of drill brushes that comes with a Scotchbrite-like pad... Also works well for cleaning copper pipe before sweating it.
