California used to be the Golden State. Now the Blackout State might be more accurate, as the fear of wildfires forces public utilities to periodically power down. But wildfires have always been part of California’s history, so what’s changed? Radio talk show host John Kobylt explains in our 5-minute video from 2020.

Praying for all of those affected by the wildfires in southern California 🙏

Born, raised, and lived in CA until I was 32. Beautiful state, poorly ran and liberally brainwashed. I hated being a political refugee. People literally vote themselves into poverty and they keep doing it over and over. The massive homeless issues, the insane taxes, the welfare state, it’s all true.
During COVID I never wore a mask anywhere and I was screamed at, cursed at, threatened, and turns out COVID wasn’t even really an issue.
All of this video is true. I left for Texas when I was 33 and never looked back.

As a 63 y.o. native Californian, I have watched this state going from being the best to the worst.

My husband and father in law as well as other men in his family have worked for PG and E. One thing that my husband said that needs to be talked about more is that PGE used to employ their own maintenance crews to clear out old trees and brush around their equipment and power lines. They cut that department perhaps back in the 90’s or early 2000’s and outsourced it to other companies to handle with zero accountability or oversight.

As a retired forester who is very familiar with all aspects of California forestry, I fully expected Prager U. to miss the mark in this video. They didn't. Accurate and truthful. Well done!

You did a pretty good job. I got my degree in forestry in 1980 from University of CA @ Berkeley. Though it is a shadow of its former self CAL was one of the top forestry schools in the country.. Two more points. First, fires like the Paradise fire were common before 1950. There was limited forest management before then and fires were common. The state established the CDF and began managing the forests reducing the impact of fires. In the 1980's that came to an end and a cycle of fires restarted. Second, those lumber companies you mentioned were required to build access roads in the past. When they logged they built roads allowing for control of fires. When logging ended so did access roads to control fires. Now when fires start it takes too long to get to them to control them and it is difficult to control a wild fire once it reaches a larger size. The one thing everybody agrees on is that CA fires are a reflection of how our wild lands are managed.

They can't provide enough power to their citizens yet mandate that they change all devices that use an internal combustion engine (cars, lawn equipment, etc.) to electric. How are you going to power your EV or other devices without power? Genius!

John is an LA talk radio legend! I’ve been listening to him my whole life. This is spot on BUT only touches on one of the many issues here. No water because of a fish is another big one.

Almost 30 years ago, I received my certification in forest firefighting. The instructor took us out to the LA Forest to practice cutting fire breaks. In a prophetic statement, he said CA was under threat of apocalyptic fires because eco groups lobbied to prevent clearing the floors of dead brush. Don't worry, though, everyone responsible for destroying CA has migrated to CO...including one of the executives of PG&E who is now CEO of Colorado Springs Utilities.

As a recent refugee from California, I concur.

Cutting $17 million from firefighters to find homeless people in LA by the mayor doesn't help anything. The fire service are underfunded and under equipped.

Don't have enough water in Southern California because of the smelt fish, and we can't clear the dead brush on the edges of the forest because of the grasshopper and we cut 23 million from the firefighting budget in Los Angeles county and diverted the money to dei so like everybody outside California is saying we get what we vote for

As a former California Firefighter, I also concur.
