Evolution of Sunday School Music - A Cappella Medley

A Cappella Arrangement by David Wesley

Buckle up! I hope you enjoy this nostalgic ride through 28 classic Sunday School songs. Since most of these songs have unknown authors and dates of origin, a chronological medley was pretty much impossible. Instead, I let the medley write itself - evolving gradually using common words and themes into its final form. Thanks so much to my sons, nieces, and nephews for their smiles and their colouring skills!

I'm glad you left the baby talking/crying in there. I heard a phrase in regards to babies in churches one time that stuck with me: "A church without crying, is a church that is dying." We have to pass it on to the next generation. Great compilation as always.

The accents, faces, and dynamic of each song was so accurate. I could just heard the original singers shining through.

my husband and i were singing some of these to each other while reminiscing about church camp. the joy of simple melodies and lyrics while learning about God's love---priceless.

Thanks for putting Father Abraham in here - it's a favourite on youth camp and we do all the actions.

What I love most is the encouragement of "child like faith" and enthusiasm in this medley. Singing these songs in youth is something fun and joyful. Now as a 40 year old, when I hear some of these songs especially Jesus Loves Me, I can't help but tear up knowing exactly what they mean. Unconditional love and forgiveness. And not just that, there's a purity and innocence within the songs that just feels good! God bless ❤✝️🕊🙏

This is so beautiful!
Being Nigerian and growing up in Nigeria, we sang most of these songs in Sunday School. Such fond memories 💖

I knew EVERY single one of those songs! So much of our theology is based on those words. What a legacy given to those of us who had the blessing of growing up in Sunday School. At nearly 59, I have been teaching Sunday School myself since I was 14!

I lost my Kindergarten Sabbath School teacher last week. I will miss her. I remember her singing many of these songs when I was very little. 💒

RIP Mrs. Densford (1951-2021)

Well done.

I knew at least 90% of these songs because of kids church and kids camp. In fact the oil in my lamp song we had a few different versions of that that we would sing. Like we would make up our own lines for it. Like "give me wax on my board keep me surfing for the Lord" or "give me gas in my Ford keep me trucking for the Lord".

I am an anthropologist/archaeologist, so from a professional standpoint your videos are super interesting to me. But as a Christian, I am just so happy that you were blessed with this talent and are sharing it with the world! Your work is really fantastic. God bless you, and God bless the little children!

Well, that was a sledgehammer of sentimentality!! I’m 40 years old and I haven’t thought about those songs in years, but I found myself not only singing along, but doing the motions!! Thank you for doing this! 😁
