In March 2020, scientists have spotted another 1 million square kilometre-wide hole in the ozone layer over the arctic region. They said it has caused due to very low temperatures in the arctic region. Later, on 23 April 2020, Copernicus (ECMWF) revealed that the arctic hole has split in 2 and then disappeared. After that, other agencies have also confirmed that the Arctic hole has healed.
How the hole was created?
Actually, this year the polar vortex, which is the high-altitude currents that are responsible for bringing cold air to the polar-regions, has been extremely powerful and temperatures inside it have been very cold, results in generating stratospheric clouds. These clouds destroyed the ozone layer as they had high concentration of ozone-depleting chemicals in it, creating a hole in the layer.
How the hole was healed?
Some scientist said that, the closing of the hole was not due to the reduced levels of pollution. Instead the polar vortex, is responsible for the healing of ozone layer. But other scientists disagree with this theory.
So, exactly how the hole was healed is still a debatable topic among scientists but if the hole wouldn’t healed then it can lead to another threat to life on Earth.
