If she said her mother has some Spanish heritage, I'd believe it. But she completely ignored that her mother was born and raised in the Philippines and is genetically related to Lea Salonga. Therefore, her mother is Filipino when it comes to her genetics and culture.

She is completely self involved. I used to a fan of hers. She mocks the people, cultures and customs of the places she visits when they aren’t to her liking. Needed to do an outfit change causing her to be late when she was down the street from meeting someone. I watched half of the first episode and had to turn it off. It’s giving diva without the resume to back up the behavior. Then to disown her Filipina heritage is even more sad.

She's not Filipino, Spanish or Irish, she is CANADIAN. She was born in Canada and raised in Canada. Just because her parents are from somewhere else doesn't mean she is. To be a part of something you need to experience and know or try to learn the the culture, tradition, languages, everyday life, history and even the struggles. If you don't even know that then don't claim any part of it.

Why the "I'm half spanish" comment bothers me (and so many others) because many descendants of Filipinos (or places that were colonized, like me a Filipino-American or Shay, albeit half: Filipino-Canadian) went through a period growing up where mostly white people didn't know about the Philippines, therefore we had to liken our heritage and culture to something more recognizable for others, by saying "oh yes its Spanish" just like my last name, etc. We grew up hearing phrases like "oh that person is HALF white and HALF FIlipino, no wonder they're gorgeous because they're half" (and alluding that being full means you're brown, aka less than. A lifetime of constant self-un-acceptance. I would have loved to watch this show. HBO puts out great sh*t. I am always proud to support Shay's brands and businesses, I have at least 3 of her Beis bags, not just because she is Filipino heritage like me, but because I believe they are amazing quality made by a woman who gets it. The bonus was that she's a half FIlipina and something more to be proud of... but sounds like shes making content now for the whites. This is just so revealing of decades of institutionalized racism, ya'll coulda really edited that one out.
