This whole experience was awkward… my First Pilates class

I have been doing pilates for 15 years and have never seen an "instructor" like her. How can anyone enjoy the workout with her talking like that. No.

I'm often the only Black person in my Pilates classes. Sometimes there are 2 of us in a class, but who cares? We're all there for the same reason, regardless of color. My instructors just teach the classes. No extra commentary.

I was the only black woman in my class as well. The environment felt cool I did get some long stares but I was totally prepared lol. I’m not looking for sisterhood or to be liked, just treat me like the normal person that I am. For the people who are confused as to how to approach poc, don’t try to be “hip” just keep it respectful.❤️

I think all fitness isntructors should just never comment on anything related to body weight and body image, regardless the intentions. Because everyone will just interpret things differently.

As a Pilates teacher, I can tell you that sometimes a person walks in the room and they just make us feel nervous for one reason or another. Mostly because we want that new person to love Pilates and come back!!

And it can become easy to get hyper focused on that one person.

For me, some recent people who made me feel super nervous are: a random hot guy (it’s primarily ladies at my studio), super fit young girl (we have an older clientele and I want more younger people to join!), a group of snotty clients who complain all the time…

I’m sure this girl was having the same feelings… You were new and different, and she really wanted you to feel comfortable and wanted you to come back. Unfortunately, she made you feel uncomfortable. 😂😬

I was glad to hear at the end of the video that you planned to come back anyway! I’m willing to bet that instructor went home feeling embarrassed!

There is a lot of pressure nowadays to NOT BE RACIST. It’s a bit extreme. People get triggered so easily which is understandable. It’s a balance of being aware if you are being triggering and being aware if you are being triggered. Focus on YOU and your healing not other people.

The more important issue is, pilates socks. In public places like this, it's so easy to catch something. Plus, pilates socks would help you with your grip.
